On a record-breaking day for the Eastern Washington University track and field team, senior
Rebecca Tarbert and the men's 4x100 relay were crowned Big Sky champions in the final day of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships Friday (May 11).
The men's 4x100 relay team earned first with a school-record finish of 40.39, marking the first time Eastern has taken home a title in the event. Tarbert took first with time of 11.64, aided by a wind of 2.9 meters per second, putting her second on the EWU all-time list. This also marks the first time that EWU has earned a title in that event since 1994 when Joyce Rainwater won it.
"The team never stopped performing from start to finish today and came away with numerous seasonal and lifetime bests," men's head coach
Stan Kerr said. "Our 4x100 ignited the day for us. Setting a new school record and winning the race exemplified the grace and power of relays."
"The women's performance of the day goes to
Rebecca Tarbert for her finish in the 100," women's head coach
Marcia Mecklenburg said. "It was a great way to finish her career at EWU. We had some great performances all four days of the meet. Some things didn't quite go our way, but we had other things that did go our way. Next up is the NCAA West Regionals."
Team Scores
The men finished fourth out of 12 teams with 92 points. On the women's side, EWU took sixth with 61 points.

More comments from men's head coach Stan Kerr . . .
On individuals: "Our motto of everyone contributes rang true again today. Tim (Hammer), Gavin (Javelin), Keshun (TJ), Parker and Tremaine (Hurdles), Jeremy-Jonah-Joe-Dawson (100m) and Austin (400m) were all shining stars today."
More comments from women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg . . .
On individuals: "The meet started with a bang today, as
Paris Flenoy threw a huge PR in the shot and made it to the podium.
Alexis Rolan hurt her hamstring in the 4x100 relay. Alexis still went to the starting line and finished that 100 for EWU to give us a point. That point ended up making a one place difference in the team scoring at the end of the meet so kudos to Alexis for volunteering to do that. Other then the pulled hamstring, it was a great 4x100 race as
Samantha Raines,
Alexis Rolan, Isabella Millsap and
Rebecca Tarbert pulled off a fourth place finish."
On finishes: "In addition to Alexis's finish in the 100, we had a slew of eighth place finishes.
Leanne Asper and
Kari Hamilton raced to eighth in the 800 and 5,000 respectively. The 4x400 relay made up of
Sophie Bowles,
Rebecca Tarbert,
Leanne Asper and
Jessica Linde ran alone in the slow heat to beat the time of one of the team's in the fast heat."
On pole vaulters: "
Macey Weitz and
Elizabeth Prouty made it to the medal stand in the pole vault and teammate
Samantha Raines held on in that event for some much needed points."
On field events: "The final field event for the women was a good one as
Madison Doepker came from behind and earned all-Big Sky honors and
Emma Chappell pulled off a with personal record throw."
