Eagles Look to Continue Road-Winning Streak at Southern Utah, Northern Arizona this Week

Winners of two-straight on the road, Eastern Washington takes on the Thunderbirds and Lumberjacks as the first half of Big Sky play winds down

CHENEY, Wash. – With the first half of Big Sky Conference play nearly completed, the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team is heading out on the road for a pair of matches this week. The road stint takes them to Southern Utah on Thursday, Jan. 31 for a 5:30 p.m. Pacific time tip. On Feb. 2, the Eagles take on Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz., at 1 p.m. PT.

A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: Eastern Washington is 4-13 on the season with a 3-5 mark in Big Sky play. The Eagles look to bounce back after losing to Portland State (76-64) and Sacramento State (73-70) at home last week. On the road this season, Eastern is 3-2 in league games.
 
Violet Kapri Morrow leads the Eagles in scoring with 19.0 points per game, a mark that ranks her 38th in the nation and third in the conference. In Big Sky contests, Morrow pours on 20.8 points per game. She is also in the midst of an 18-game double-digit scoring streak dating back to last season and leads the team with 5.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
 
Grace Kirscher is second on the team with 9.7 points per game and averages 10.3 in conference play. Alissa Sealby adds 9.2 points per game (11.3 in BSC games) and is second in the Big Sky in three-point field goal percentage with 43.3 percent accuracy beyond the arc.
 
Brittany Klaman leads the way with 2.7 assists per game and freshman Bella Cravens leads Eastern with 0.9 blocks per contest.
 
As a team, the Eagles rank 51st in the nation with 7.9 three-pointers per game. They knock down 33.3 percent of their shots from three-point range, which is 91st across all of Division I. Eastern has drained at least nine threes in its last four contests. EWU averages 60.2 points per game to go with 33.6 boards while shooting 37.1 percent from the field.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles went 0-2 at home last week. In a 76-64 loss to Portland State, Eastern Washington shot just 35 percent from the field in the contest, but drained 10 three-pointers in the loss. EWU trailed by one point at the half after shooting over 43 percent, but fell into an offensive lull and were outscored 20-5 in the third quarter. The Eagles were led by senior Alissa Sealby who had 17 points, just one-point shy of a career-high.
 
Eastern Washington lost a close battle to Sacramento State, 73-70, after trailing 60-44 to start the fourth quarter. Eastern was led by two in double figures, as Violet Kapri Morrow poured on 27 points on 10-of-18 from the field with four made three pointers while leading the Eagles with seven rebounds. Uriah Howard rounded out the scoring with a season-high 16 points.
 
Trailing by 60-44 to start the final period and 67-57 with 5:32 remaining, the Eagles used a 10-0 run to come within six points to make it a 69-63 game. Morrow hit a three-pointer to cap a 7-2 run for Eastern Washington and made it a one-point contest, 71-70 with 2:03 on the clock. With nine seconds remaining, Sacramento State's Kennedy Nicholas headed to the line and made both free throws and that proved to be the difference maker as the Hornets held on for the 73-70 victory.
 
A LOOK AT THE THUNDERBIRDS: Southern Utah is 5-13 on the season with a 2-7 mark in conference play. Currently on a four-game losing streak, the Thunderbirds most recently lost to Northern Arizona at home on Jan. 28, 78-69.
 
Southern Utah is led by three players who average double-digit points per game in Harley Hansen (12.8 ppg), Rebecca Cardenas (10.7 ppg) and Breanu Reid (10.0 ppg). Cardenas also leads the team with 6.9 boards per game and 3.8 assists per game. Hansen ranks 46th in the nation with 2.5 steals per game.
 
The Thunderbirds rank first in the conference and 29th in the nation in three-point field goal defense, only allowing opponents to sink 27.2 percent of their shots behind the arc. SUU averages 61.8 points per game while shooting 36.2 percent from the field. They allow their opponents to score 70.3 points per game and shoot over 45 percent.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Eastern Washington leads the all-time series over Southern Utah, 11-7. They have won eight out of the last 10 meetings, including two-straight. The Eagles have won the past three meetings in Cedar City.
 
Last year, Eastern swept the meetings between the two squads. The Eagles picked up a 58-41 victory at home before topping the Thunderbirds 70-49 on the road.
 
A LOOK AT THE LUMBERJACKS: Northern Arizona is 6-12 on the year and 2-7 in Big Sky play. Before topping Southern Utah on the road on Jan. 28, the Lumberjacks had lost five in a row. NAU will host Idaho before taking on the Eagles on Saturday.
 
The Lumberjacks are led by Kaleigh Paplow who averages 14.6 points per contest. Khiarica Rasheed (11.1) and Lauren Orndoff (10.1) also average double figures. Orndoff ranks third in the Big Sky in three-point percentage, making 42.5 percent of her shots from range.
 
As a team, the Lumberjacks average 64.8 points per game while shooting 37.9 percent. They grab an average of 40.1 boards per game. Northern Arizona also ranks 73rd in the nation and second in the Big Sky in three-point field goal defense, only allowing their opponents to hit 28.9 percent of their shots.
 
SERIES HISTORY: The Eagles have won three-straight over the Lumberjacks and lead the all-time series 38-26. At Northern Arizona, Eastern is just 12-18 and EWU has also won eight of the last 10 overall meetings. Under head coach Wendy Schuller, Eastern is 23-12.
 
Last season, Eastern beat Northern Arizona at home by a score of 82-62 on Jan. 18. In the final regular season game of the year in Flagstaff, Eastern beat NAU 98-83. In the victory, former Eagle Delaney Hodgins set the Big Sky Conference's and Eastern Washington's single-game scoring record with a whopping 46 points in the victory. Violet Kapri Morrow added 23 points while Uriah Howard scored 16.
 
1,000-POINTS AND COUNTING: On Jan. 10, 2019 in a road victory at Montana, senior Violet Kapri Morrow became the 18th member of Eastern Washington's 1,000-point club. Needing just seven points at the beginning of the night, Morrow scored 17 points to reach the milestone. She began the season with 800 career points and took just 106 career games to join the club, the 15th-fastest in program history. The Tacoma, Wash., native is the first player to reach the milestone since Delaney Hodgins during the 2016-17 season.
 
Morrow now has 1,085 career points and counting, which is 14th all-time on Eastern's career scoring list, needing just 20 more points to move into 13th.
