Quick Road Trip to Northern Colorado Awaits EWU Women's Basketball

The Eagles look to avenge a Jan. 7 overtime loss to the Bears

CHENEY, Wash. – A quick one-game road trip awaits the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team this Thursday (Feb. 14) at Northern Colorado. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. Pacific time inside the Bank of America Arena.
 
The Eagles (6-15, 5-7) look to avenge a 67-62 overtime loss to the Bears on Jan. 7 in Reese Court. After Thursday's game, Eastern Washington returns home for three-straight beginning with Idaho on Monday, Feb. 18, at 2:05 p.m.

A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: The Eagles have won two out of their last three contests, most recently splitting with Montana State and Montana last week at home. Eastern Washington currently sits at 6-15 overall and 5-7 in Big Sky Conference play. With the top-five teams receiving a bye at the conference tournament, the Eagles are still fighting as they find themselves tied for the fifth-best conference record with Montana.
 
Violet Kapri Morrow is third in the Big Sky Conference in scoring with 19.0 points per game, knocking down 44.6 percent of her shots from the field. In the midst of a 22-game double digit scoring streak dating back to last season, Morrow also leads the Eagles with 5.9 rebounds per game.
 
Grace Kirscher is the other Eagle to average double figures with 10.2 per game, while Alissa Sealby adds 8.8. Both are shooting over 34 percent from three-point range which ranks inside the top 15 in the conference.
 
Bella Cravens leads the team and ranks ninth in the conference with 1.0 blocks per game while Brittany Klaman dishes 3.0 assists per game to lead the team.
 
As a team, the Eagles knock down 8.0 three-point field goals per game and have made at least nine in seven out of their last eight games. In conference play, they average 64.5 points, 34.4 rebounds, 12.8 assists, 6.2 steals and 3.2 blocks per game.
 
LAST TIME OUT: A slow night of offense for the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team ended in a 61-47 loss to Montana State at home on Thursday evening (Feb. 7).
 
The Eagles shot just 29.1 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range in the loss. Violet Kapri Morrow moved up to 10th on Eastern's all-time scoring list and turned in her second double-double of the season of 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the team.
 
Eastern Washington shot just 15.4 percent in the second half on 4-for-26 shooting and were just 1-for-15 from three-point range. The Bobcats struggling offensively as well, only making 8-of-27 shot attempts, but were able to sink 9-of-10 free throws en route to the 61-47 victory.
 
For the sixth-straight time, the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team defeated Montana on Saturday (Feb. 9) in a Big Sky Conference game at Reese Court by a score of 67-64.
 
The game saw 11 lead changes and six ties and was closely contested all the way to the finish. Violet Kapri Morrow, who led the team with 25 points and seven rebounds, scored the game-winning layup with 39 seconds left and Alissa Sealby sank both free throw attempts with six seconds remaining to help lead the Eagles to victory.
 
In the fourth quarter alone, Eastern shot 50 percent from the field (6-12) and held the Griz to just 25 percent (3-12) after they shot over 46 percent in the third.
 
Jessica McDowell-White was the other Eagle in double figures, turning in 11 points with three made three-point field goals. Uriah Howard finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
 
With 39 seconds on the clock, Morrow capitalized with a layup to give the Eagles a 65-64 lead. Alissa Sealby, who has not missed a free throw yet in conference play, headed to the line with 6.3 seconds left and made both free throws to extend Eastern's cushion to three points, 67-64. Montana's attempt at a last second shot fell short as the Eagles won their sixth straight over the Griz by a final score of 67-64.
 
A LOOK AT THE BEARS: Northern Colorado is tied for second place in the Big Sky standings with Idaho State, sitting at 15-7 overall and 10-3 in conference play. Most recently, the Bears topped Sacramento State on Monday after losing to Portland State on Feb. 9.
 
The Bears are led by Savannah Smith who ranks second in the conference with 20.1 points per game. Alexis Chapman is the other UNC player in double figures, averaging 12.5. Ali Meyer is second in the conference with 11.3 rebounds per contest while Krystal Leger-Walker leads the league with 5.8 assists per game.
 
As a team, Northern Colorado averages 67.1 points per game while shooting 40.1 percent from the field.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Eastern Washington trails the all-time series, 9-15 and have dropped the last three meetings. In Bank of Colorado arena, the Eagles are 3-8.
 
The last three losses have been decided by less than 10 points, including a 67-62 overtime loss earlier this season to the Bears in Cheney on Jan. 7. Violet Kapri Morrow, who led the team with 21 points, tied the game 58-58 with a layup with 3.6 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter which eventually sent the game into overtime. After Kirscher made a layup to start, Eastern Washington was held scoreless for almost four minutes during the overtime period and Northern Colorado was able to outscore the Eagles 9-to-4 in the quarter en route to the 67-62 decision.
 
UP NEXT: The longest home stand of the season awaits the Eagles when they return home to Reese Court. Three-straight home games begin with Idaho on Monday, Feb. 18 for a President's Day matinee doubleheader set to begin at 2:05 p.m. Both the Eastern Washington and Idaho men's teams will follow at 4:15 p.m. The first 500 students to both games will receive a free t-shirt.
