A Battle with Idaho Begins Three-Straight at Home for the Eagles

Eastern looks to continue a two-game winning streak this Monday (Feb. 18) at 2:05 p.m. with the men’s team to follow at approximately 4:15 p.m.

CHENEY, Wash. – Looking to extend a two-game winning streak, the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team will return to Reese Court to host the University of Idaho for a President's Day matinee on Monday (Feb. 18) at 2:05 p.m.

The game can be watched locally around the region on SWX. Additionally, the contest can be viewed for free on WatchBigSky.com or Pluto TV Channel 234. Live stats will be available on EWUStats.com and in-game updates along with video highlights can be found by following @EWUWBB on Twitter.

COMING UP AT REESE COURT: The EWU and Idaho men's basketball teams will face off following the women's game at approximately 4:15 p.m. as a part of the second-annual doubleheader between the two schools. The first 500 EWU students to Monday's game will receive a free t-shirt.

AROUND THE BIG SKY: Eastern Washington (7-15, 6-7) has won two games in a row and are fresh off of a road victory at Northern Colorado on Thursday (Feb. 14). Currently, EWU is tied for sixth with Montana in the conference standings. Eastern holds the tiebreaker over the Grizzlies after winning both meetings this season.

The top-five teams receive a bye at the Big Sky Conference Tournament held in Boise, Idaho on March 11-16. Before North Dakota left the Big Sky prior to this season, the top four teams received a bye, and Eastern has been in the top-four at the end of the regular season for the past seven years.

The Eagles are the only team in the Big Sky not playing Saturday (Feb. 16) due to the new 11-team schedule format. Idaho is currently in first place in the BSC standings with an overall record of 13-8 and a conference record of 10-2. The Vandals play at Northern Colorado today (Feb. 16) before coming to Cheney on Monday (Feb. 18). Eastern recently topped UNC, who is in fourth in the Big Sky standings (15-8, 10-4).

Right behind the Vandals is Idaho State (16-7, 11-3) and Portland State (18-4, 10-3). Montana State rounds out the top-five with an overall record of 12-12 and 7-7 in conference play.

A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: Eastern Washington is having a solid February, as they are 3-1 during the month and have won three out of their last four contests. With seven regular season games remaining, the Eagles will play five of those at home starting on Monday. Eastern is hoping that the confines of Reese Court get a little friendlier, as the Eagles are just 2-7 overall at home this year.

Violet Kapri Morrow continues to lead the Eagles in scoring with 19.5 points per game. The mark ranks her 31st in the nation and third in the Big Sky. Morrow is coming off back-to-back 20-point performances, cashing in 25 in the win against Montana and 29 at Northern Colorado. She's scored at least 20 points in four out of the last six games and is on a 23-game double digit scoring streak dating back to last season.

Additionally, Morrow is shooting 45.3 percent from the field and leads the Eagles in both rebounds (6.1) and steals (1.4) per game. She ranks seventh in the Big Sky with 1.9 three-pointers per game.

Freshman Grace Kirscher is the other Eagles to average double figures with 10.3 per game and 11.1 in conference play. She averages 1.5 made three-pointers per game. Alissa Sealby follows with 9.0 points per game and 10.2 in league games. Sealby is a perfect 24-for-24 from the free throw line in Big Sky play and also adds 1.6 three-pointers per game while shooting 37.6 behind the arc.

Brittany Klaman leads the Eagles with 3.0 assists per game and freshman Bella Cravens ranks ninth in the Big Sky with 1.0 blocks per game.

As a team, the Eagles knock down 8.1 three-pointers per game which is second in the conference and 38th in the nation behind Idaho. As a team, they are shooting 33.3 percent from range. Eastern averages 61.0 points per game on 37.6 shooting from the field. They add 34.0 rebounds per contest and 12.2 assists to go with 3.1 blocks.

A LOOK AT THE VANDALS: Currently in first-place in the conference standings and the Big Sky preseason favorite, Idaho is 13-8 overall with a 10-2 mark in the conference. The winners of six-straight and seven out of their last eight, the Vandals will play at Northern Colorado on Saturday (Feb. 16) before coming to Cheney.

The Vandals are led by Mikayla Ferenz who is ninth in the nation and first in the Big Sky with 22.0 points per game. Taylor Pierce follows with 18.5 points per game, a mark that ranks 51st nationally and fifth in the conference. Pierce is also the nation's leader in three-pointers per game with 4.6 a contest. Ferenz is close behind in 15th with 3.24 per game.

Just like the Eagles, Idaho relies on its sharp three-point shooting, ranking first in the nation with 11.7 per game. They drain 37.9 percent of their shots from deep. Additionally, Idaho is strong at the free throw line, making 76.9 percent of their attempts. They are also solid with the ball, only committing 11.3 turnovers per game, a statistic that ranks fourth in the nation.

SERIES HISTORY: Despite having four in double figures, Eastern Washington fell to the Vandals back on Jan. 3, 2019 in Moscow by a score of 84-68.

The Eagles have dropped two-straight to Idaho and narrowly trail the all-time series, 32-36. Inside Reese Court, Eastern holds a 19-13 advantage.

Last season, the two teams split the series with each winning their respective home game.

1,000-POINTS AND COUNTING: After becoming the newest and 18th member of Eastern Washington's 1,000-point club at Montana on Jan. 10, 2019, Violet Kapri Morrow continues to climb EWU's all-time scoring list.

After scoring 29 points at Northern Colorado, Morrow remains in 9th all-time with 1,190 career points. She is now just four points away from eighth place and 100 from seventh.

LAST TIME OUT: Road wins are crucial in the Big Sky Conference, and the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team will be heading back to Cheney with one after topping Northern Colorado by a score of 76-72 in Greeley on Thursday evening (Feb. 14).

Eastern shot 50 percent from the field (27-54) in the victory to go with nine three-pointers and had three in double figures. Violet Kapri Morrow led all scorers with 29 points, while Alissa Sealby added 14 and Grace Kirscher had 13.

The Eagles led for over 26 minutes of action and the win snaps a three-game losing streak to the Bears.

At the half, the Eagles led 39-31 and the teams were tied 57-57 at the end of three quarters. The Bears took their first lead since the second quarter, 59-58 in the early moments of the fourth. Eastern led by just one point when Morrow went on a 10-0 scoring run of her own to help the Eagles lead 70-61. UNC would not go away quietly, firing off six unanswered points to cut the deficit to two, 70-68.

Eastern was solid at the free throw line down the stretch, as Morrow, Sealby and McDowell-White went 2-for-2 at the stripe. With nine seconds left, McDowell-White's free throws gave Eastern a 76-70 lead. UNC would get a shot off as time ran out, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles held on for the 76-72 victory.

Eastern Washington put together its best shooting performance of the season, shooting 50 percent from the field (27-54). They held the Bears to 40.9 percent on 27-for-66 from the field. Eastern was 9-for-23 from three-point range while UNC was 10-for-28. UNC was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, but the Eagles were steady as well, making 13 of 17 attempts.

UP NEXT: Eastern Washington continues its longest home stand of the season as they host Southern Utah on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 6:05 p.m. before taking on Northern Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2:05 p.m. The Eagles will look to avenge a loss to Southern Utah earlier this month and will go for the season sweep of the Lumberjacks.
