GAME NOTES
CHENEY, Wash. – Just as quickly as it started, the non-conference portion of the season is coming to a close for the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team. The Eagles head to Pullman, Wash., to face Washington State on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at noon.
Eastern Washington (1-5, 0-2) played three games at Reese Court last week, topping The College of Idaho but falling to a pair of Western Athletic Conference foes in Grand Canyon and Seattle U.
Kennedy Dickie scored in double figures in all three games and brings a streak of four-straight into Tuesday's game. She currently averages 13.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game for the Eagles.
Freshman
Aaliyah Alexander paces the Eagles with 13.5 points per contest. She also leads the team in assists (2.7/game) and minutes (34.0). Both
Jenna Dick and
Alexyss Newman round out the scoring, each averaging 11.0 points per game. As a team, the Eagles rank 32
nd in the nation in free-throw percentage (77.2%) and knock down 7.0 three-pointers per game. They rank 63
rd in Division I with 139 three-point attempts, making 75 which is the 42
nd-most nationally.
Tuesday marks the first time the two in-state foes have met since the Eagles upset the Cougars in the first round of the WNIT in Pullman on March 18, 2015. It's the first regular season meeting since November of 2007. Eastern Washington may trail the all-time series 5-12, but they've won three of the last five meetings dating back to 2004. Under head coach
Wendy Schuller, EWU is 4-3 all-time against the Cougars.
The Cougars are 3-1 overall and won its first three games to start the season, including knocking off No. 21 Oregon State in Pullman on Saturday (Dec. 19). Earlier this afternoon (Dec. 21), Washington State was narrowly edged by No. 7/8 Oregon at home, 69-65, after leading for over 31 minutes of the contest.
Washington State is coached by Kamie Ethridge who is in her third season with the Cougars after four seasons at the helm with Big Sky Conference opponent, Northern Colorado.
WSU averages 65 points and 43.0 rebounds per game. Four Cougars average double figures, led by freshman Charlisse Leger-Walker with 20.7 per game. Leger-Walker also paces Washington State with 7.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.7 blocks and 3.3 steals per game.
Eastern Washington resumes Big Sky Conference play at Portland State in Portland, Ore., on Dec. 31 and Jan. 2.
