GAME NOTES
CHENEY, Wash. – After a brief pause due to COVID-19 precautions, the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team is back in action this week. The Eagles host Northern Colorado at Reese Court on Jan. 21 and Jan. 23, with tip-off set for 6:05 p.m. and 12:05 p.m., respectively.
Eastern Washington has won five out of its last seven contests and are on a four-game winning streak after beating Portland State on the road (Dec. 31 & Jan. 2) and Weber State at home (Jan. 7 and Jan. 9). The Eagles were set to play Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah, last week, but the games were wiped out due to COVID-19 concerns and precautions within EWU's program.
As a reminder, due to University, state and regional health guidelines, no fans are permitted at Eastern Washington home games. The game will be streamed for free on Pluto TV Ch. 1053 with live stats available on EWUStats.com.
The Eagles are 5-6 overall and 4-2 in Big Sky Conference play, which is third in the conference standings. The Northern Colorado Bears are 4-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play, and are coming off of a split against Idaho at home last week. The Bears are just 1-4 overall on the road this year.
Four players average double figures for the Eagles, led by freshman
Aaliyah Alexander and sophomore
Kennedy Dickie with 13.0 points per game.
Maisie Burnham (12.5 ppg) and
Jenna Dick (10.4 ppg) follow close behind.
Alexander was named Big Sky Player of the Week on Jan. 11 after averaging 15.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game in two wins over Weber State. Alexander earned a double-double in both contests, and was three assists shy of a triple double on Jan. 7 with a career-best eight assists. She has scored in double figures in four-straight games and in nine out of 11 overall.
Burnham (5-straight) and Dickie (7-straight), are also on double-digit scoring streaks. Burnham has led the team in scoring in four out of the last five games. Dickie earned her second-career double-double against Portland State on Jan. 2, as the Eagles have had at least one double-double in three-straight games.
Dickie (6.0), Burnham (5.7) and Alexander (5.1) are also the team leaders in rebounds per game. On Jan. 7 against Weber State,
Grace Kirscher made her 121
st career three-pointer which tied for 10
th all-time in EWU program history. Dick has made 94 career-three pointer's as a sophomore, and is just 28 away from reaching the same feat.
In the last four games, the Eagles have averaged 73.8 points on 41.6 percent accuracy from the field while allowing their opponents to score just 63.5 pointers per contest. Overall, the Eagles average 7.5 made three-pointers per game which is 59
th in the nation. They drain 34.0 percent of their attempts which is 74
th. Twice this season, EWU has made 14 three-pointers which is tied for third all-time in single-game history.
Eastern Washington trails the all-time series with the Bears, 11-17. EWU has won five out of the last 10 meetings, but have lost two-straight after UNC swept the season meetings last year. Eastern's last win over the Bears came in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference tournament on March 13, 2019. The Eagles have not beaten the Bears at Reese Court since Feb. 11, 2017.
The Bears boast sophomore Alisha Davis who averages 13.5 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. She is 11
th in the nation with seven double-doubles this season, and she is also 11
th with 129 total rebounds and 13
th with 28 total blocked shots to average 2.15 per game which is 35
th.
Northern Colorado averages 60.4 points per game. They are 10
th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, draining 39.2 percent of their attempts from deep and have made 83 on the year. Hannah Simental, who averages 10.2 points per game, is second across all of Division I in three-point percentage with 56.4 percent (22-39).
After this week's contests, Eastern Washington heads to Sacramento State for a pair of games on Jan. 28 and Jan. 30.
