Renata Gabuzyan Named Big Sky Player of the Week

The sophomore earns her first career nod from the conference

FARMINGTON, Utah – Eastern Washington University women's tennis player Renata Gabuzyan has been named Big Sky Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office this morning (Jan. 19).
 
The award is the first of Gabuzyan's young career and the first Player of the Week nod for the program since the 2019 season when her teammate Rylee Braeden earned the honor.
 
The sophomore picked up the lone point for Eastern Washington at the No. 6 singles spot against Gonzaga in EWU's season-opener on Jan. 17. After falling in the first set, 0-6, Gabuzyan bounced back and swiftly topped her opponent 7-6(5), 6-2 in the next sets for the victory.

"Renata had an outstanding performance in her opening singles match of the season. She fought through some early match jitters and then absolutely turned it on to come out on top against a very good senior player from Gonzaga. She showed grit and a tremendous desire to come out on the winning end of the match," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "This was also a very rewarding win for her because I know how hard she worked to get better since last season when things were shut down due to the pandemic. I couldn't be more pleased for her success because of the person she is off the court as well. She always works hard and does everything I ask of her with utmost determination and energy. I see really great things in store for her in our upcoming matches."
 
She is now 1-0 at the No. 6 position in her career after finishing 5-5 overall at the No. 5 spot in last year's shortened season.
 
Eastern Washington returns to action on Jan. 30 at Washington State.
