Eastern Washington Soccer Closes Out Regular Season Hosting Idaho for Senior Day

The Eagles look to advance to the Big Sky Championships and honor eight seniors this Sunday

CHENEY, Wash. – As the final regular season match approaches, the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team welcomes the Idaho Vandals to the EWU Soccer Field this Sunday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. Pacific time.

The Eagles head into the match with an overall record of 5-11 and 3-5 in Big Sky Conference play and look to honor eight seniors in Kelsee Winston, Sariah Keister, Kaelyn Barnes, Janae Lee, Marissa Mills, Jordyn King, Brittany Delridge and Taylor Matheny.

SENIOR DAY: Winston comes from Pasco, Wash., and has been awarded a Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week nod four times throughout her time at Eastern. She has appeared in 72 total matches and started in 67 of them, as well as holds the all-time program record for career shutouts with 22 total shutouts.

Keister is a Lakewood, Wash., native and during her time at Eastern she has been nodded with a First-Team All-Big Sky Forward and a Second-Team All-Big Sky Forward award, which she received following her junior and senior year, respectively. Throughout her time at Eastern, Keister has played in 72 total matches and has started in 48 of them, scoring a total of 12 goals and solidifying her spot at No. 8 all-time in career goals for the EWU program.

Barnes is a Spokane Valley, Wash., native and has appeared in 41 matches, making two starts and recorded 709 total minutes on the pitch. Following her junior season, Barnes was named to the Fall Big Sky All-Academic team.

Lee came to Eastern from Moreno Valley, Calif., after being ranked No. 37 in Southern California by Top Drawer Soccer. Following her junior season, Lee was named to the Fall Big Sky All-Academic team. Throughout her time as an Eagle, the senior has played in 51 total games, making 31 starts.

Mills is a Renton, Wash., native and transferred to EWU after spending her freshman year at Utah Valley. She has appeared in 48 total matches and started in 35 of them.

King is from Menifee, Calif., and transferred to EWU after spending her first two years at Grambling State. She has appeared and started in 27 matches since becoming an Eagle and has anchored the Eagle backline to hold seven total shutouts during her EWU career.

Delridge is a Missoula, Mont., native who redshirted her first year on campus, and now has appeared in 59 matches making a total of 30 starts. Throughout her time at EWU, Delridge has scored a total of six goals and tallied three assists. After the 2020-21 season, she was named to the Fall Big Sky All-Academic team.

Matheny is from West Richland, Wash., and earned Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Big Sky Defender during her 2019 junior season as well as Second-Team All-Big Sky Forward after a shortened 2020 senior season. Throughout her time at EWU, Matheny has scored a total of eight goals and tallied six assists in 68 matches played while making 48 starts.

A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: The Eagles currently stand in seventh place with nine points along with Sac State (3-4) in the Big Sky Conference with a 3-5 record. Eastern leads in total saves with 125 and a .817 save percentage.

Individually, Madison Kem and Gillian Martin lead the squad in points (6) with Kem collecting three goals and Martin securing two goals and two assists. Sariah Keister and Maddie Morgan each have two goals and tallied one assist.

LAST TIME OUT: Eastern is returning after hosting Montana last Sunday to a 2-0 deficit at the EWU Soccer Field in Cheney.

The Griz applied the pressure early which paid off after they slotted an early first half goal in the 15th minute. The Eagles battled relentlessly, creating multiple threatening chances including a shot that would shatter off the woodwork, however it was Montana who capitalized on their chances as they would slot a second and final goal in the 65th minute.

ALL-TIME SERIES: Eastern is currently 13-14-1 overall with Idaho. Last time the Eagles took on UI was at home as they won 2-0 from goals by newly departured McKaley Goffard and senior Taylor Matheny.

KNOWING YOUR OPPONENT: IDAHO

Idaho is sitting in fifth place in the Big Sky with a 3-4-1 conference record and 10 points. The Vandals are 9-5-2 overall while going 4-4-0 on the road. Idaho is coming off a 3-2 win versus Northern Colorado.

The Vandals are led by Jeremy Clevenger who enter his fourth season at the helm, and was named the Big Sky Coach of the Year for the Spring 2021 season after his squad went 5-3 in conference play. Sophomore forward Jadyn Hanks leads the team with five goals and one assist while sophomore forward Maddy Lasher has scored four goals and tallied three assists. As a team, they average 9.1 shots a game while allowing 13.5 shots from their opponents.

Avrie Fox has been in net for UI, with a 8-5-2 record and a .830 save percentage.

UP NEXT: Eastern wraps up the regular season with hopes of clinching a spot in the Big Sky Conference Tournament set for Nov. 3-7 in Greeley, Colo.

The Big Sky Conference Tournament will consist of the top six teams with the highest points per match average who will qualify. Currently, Weber State and Northern Colorado sit at the top of the table with 18 points each. Montana is two points below at 16 while Northern Arizona sits in fourth place with 12 points. Idaho is currently in fifth place with 10 points, one point ahead of both Sacramento State and Eastern Washington who each have nine. Portland State (7) sits right above Idaho State (6) and Southern Utah (1) resides in last place. With the matches being played this weekend, EWU must win versus Idaho and rely on other programs to solidify their spot in the conference tournament.
