Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eastern Washington Scores Third-Most Amount of Points in Program History in Win Over Evergreen State

The Eagles tied the school record of 17 three-pointers in a 101-38 win for the first victory for head coach Joddie Gleason

The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team is in the win column after a 101-38 throttling of Evergreen State College today (Nov. 21) at Reese Court. The point total is the third-most in program history, and the Eagles also made 17 three-pointers to tie the single-game school record.

The victory marked the first of head coach Joddie Gleason's career, as the Eagles improve to 1-3 overall on the young season. The Geoducks, who play in the Cascade Collegiate Conference at the NAIA level, drop to 0-3.

It was the most amount of points scored in a single game since March 2, 2018 and 17 three-pointers tie the school record set back on Jan. 18, 2020.

Both Jordyn Boesel and Jaydia Martin made five three-pointers each, finishing with 17 points apiece to lead the team. Nuria Cunill, in her first start of the season, earned the first double-double of her career with 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Jaleesa Lawrence finished with a career-high 14 points while Andie Zylak added 10 for a new career-high as well.

"Today was awesome and I'm happy for our team, they've been working really hard and they deserve the reward of a win after all of their hard work. It was special to celebrate this with all of these great people," said head coach Joddie Gleason. "It's easy to not play at your best in these situations, but I feel like our team did a nice job of doing the things we asked. We asked them to share the ball and to set others up, that was something we'd been driving home this week. We needed to take uncontested shots versus instead of settling for contested shots, and getting over 20 assists showed that we were doing that. Making the shots helped, but setting people up was a big goal. Defensively, we had different team goals that we wanted to lock down and I loved that it occurred over all four quarters."

Eastern Washington made seven three-pointers in the first quarter, making its first four attempts from behind the arc to take a 12-3 lead. Evergreen State College then used a 7-0 run to threaten Eastern's lead 13-10, forcing the Eagles to take a timeout. Out of the break, EWU pulled back ahead with a 7-0 run for its largest lead of the game. Jordyn Boesel would hit consecutive triples with under 40 seconds left and the Eagles held a comfortable 26-11 lead after the first.

The Eagles outscored the Geoducks 27-9 in the second quarter after shooting 52.4 percent (11-21) from the field and 50 percent (4-8) from the free throw line. Boesel and Martin each had two three-pointers in the second half, while Zylak added six. Defensively, the Eagles held the Geoducks to 4-of-17 (23.5%) from the field. After two quarters of play, the Eagles led 53-20, scoring 50 points in a half for the first time since Feb. 21, 2019 against Southern Utah.

The success continued into the second half as the Eagles opened play on a 9-0 run and didn't allow Evergreen to score until the 5:17 mark and held them without a field goal until there were 27 second left in the quarter, outscoring ESC 27-8 to lead 80-28 with a quarter to go. Eastern's largest run of 15-0 came in the third quarter as well.

The Eagles cruised to victory, shooting 56.3 percent from the field in the fourth quarter and outscored the Geoducks once again, 21-10, en route to the 101-38 win.
