PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Eastern Washington University women's golf team finished tied for 11
th today (March 1) in its first day at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. The Eagles shot 310 strokes in the first round and 311 strokes in the second for a total of 621 strokes on 36 holes.
"Today was a little rough. The start of each round really hurt us into unrecoverable position. We definitely have some cobwebs coming off a long stretch of not competing," said head coach
Brenda Howe. "Tomorrow we need to be mentally stronger in order to post a lower score. We did see some good rounds from
Jaelin Ishikawa, and another from
Stephanie Chelack. Hopefully we come back strong tomorrow and climb the leaderboard a little."
After two rounds, the Eagles placed fourth among the five Big Sky Conference schools competing, defeating Montana State (628) by seven strokes. EWU finished 44 strokes away from first-place Grand Canyon (577) and 27 strokes away from third-place conference opponent Northern Arizona (594). California Baptist shot a 579 to place second and Seattle shot a 594 to tie with NAU. Conference foe Idaho shot 604 strokes and finished 17 strokes ahead of Southern Utah (621) who tied with Eastern.
