Top-notch weather meant top-notch performances for seven Eastern Washington University athletes in the decathlon and heptathlon at the Bigfoot Multis, which concluded Friday (April 16) at Spokane Falls Community College.
Senior
Quintin Porterfield finished second in the men's decathlon with 5,905 points, and sophomore
Madelyn Knight was the runner-up in the women's heptathlon with 4,749 points. All seven of the competitors registered marks that will rank high in the Big Sky Conference standings, with the league championships in the multi events taking place on May 12-13 in Ogden, Utah.
In just her second career heptathlon, Knight's performance ranks her fourth all-time at EWU, just 108 points from the school record. Sophomore
Hayden McAuliff had a two-day total of 4,175 in the heptathlon to place fourth. Three others also competed, including single athletes from Washington State and Spokane CC.
"It was great to see both Madi Knight and
Hayden McAuliff get personal records," said Eastern women's coach
Marcia Mecklenburg. "Madi moved up another spot on the EWU all-time list with her mark, and I know she has her eye on that school record."
Besides Porterfield, Eastern competitors placed fourth through seventh in the decathlon, including junior
Parker Wubbena (5,630), sophomore
Elijah Conley (5,601), freshman
Chris Homen (5,533) and sophomore
James Lane (5,073). The field included a total of 10 competitors representing Eastern, WSU, Whitworth and Spokane CC.

She also scored 795 points in the 200 with a 26.03 clocking, finishing as the runner-up in both events. McAuliff won the 200 with a time of 25.72 to score 822 points – her high of the day. Earlier this season at the Whitworth Multi-Event Meet in Spokane, Wash., on March 25-26, Knight competed in her first heptathlon as an Eagle and scored 4,622 points. That mark placed Knight No. 5 on the Eagle's all-time top-10 list. The school record is 4,857 points set by
Kendra Hamm in 2017, with the No. 2 mark 4,850 points and No. 3 at 4,825.
In the men's decathlon, Homen finished sixth with 5,462 total points at Whitworth.
Comments from Multi Events Coach Dave Nielsen
"Madelyn and Hayden are both freshmen and finished the event with personal bests. "Madi" was second and is closing in on a school record. She also improved on a team-leading time in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.60. Hayden's time in the 200 was a personal best of 25.72, proving she is one of the fastest on the Eagle squad. For the Eagle men, four of the five recorded personal bests in the decathlon."
