CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's tennis squad hosted its first Big Sky Conference match today against Idaho and found victory in a 4-3 battle at the EWU Tennis Courts in Cheney, Wash. The Eagles begin league play 1-0 and improve to an overall record of 5-8 and extend their winning streak to two-straight matches.
"This was one of those close Big Sky Conference battles that comes down to the end. There was no give on either side and Idaho did a great job of competing hard out there today. We came out a bit tight in doubles play, and we gave them that point early in the match," said head coach
Dustin Hinson. "But we did not let that keep us down. We regrouped, got back up, and fought back in singles play to get the 4-3 win."
The Eagles began the match giving up the doubles point to go down 1-0, but bounced back with four singles play wins in
Jennifer Kida at No.1,
Scout Mathews at No.2,
Renata Gabuzyan at No.5 and
Yasmin Mansouri at the No.6 singles spot.
"
Renata Gabuzyan and
Yasmin Mansouri were really dominant in their singles matches, and
Jennifer Kida was able to get a good win at the No.1 singles spot. With the team match tied 3-3, it came down to the last match on court two with freshman
Scout Mathews," added Hinson. "This was
Scout Mathews' first conference match and she battled back from a set down to win the final two sets. She was a fighter out there and had the desire to do what it takes to come out on top. I'm proud of the resilience and determination that the whole team showed to get this big win."
