The Eastern Washington University cross country teams hit the course once again today (Sept. 10) at the Cougar Classic in Colfax, Wash., which was hosted by Washington State.

"With a lot of new runners, we had many first timers at the 6k and 8k distance. Most of them adjusted to the extra distance well, and either came through at a high school personal record or would be faster in comparison between the distances," noted head coach Sam Read on today's performances. "We really emphasized patience and working through the race this week and we did a good job executing the plan. Our strength on both sides is how well we can work off each other in our packs. We were patient early, and our packs moved together in the middle laps."

The Eagle women and men ran their first 6k and 8k, respectively, races of the season and were led by freshman Nicole Deherrera (20^th, 22:08) and sophomore Justin Roosma (9^th, 24:33.6) for the second-straight meet. Noah Hasselblad notched a 20^th-place finish with a time of 25:01.4 followed by Carter Ledwith who finished 33^rd in a time of 25:34.1. On the women's side, Jasmine Muneton finished 24^th overall with a time of 22:19.0 and was followed by Loren Linnenburger who clocked a 27^th-place finish at 22:36.8.

"Justin Roosma likely had the fastest last 2k in the field and moved up 15 to 20 places. Noah Hasselblad had a big-time debut, he flirted with the 25-minute barrier in his first 8k," added Read. "Nicole Deherrera ran tough up front in a very talented field, and Loren Linnenburger and Jasmin Muneton had a great last lap in their first 6k."

The women earned a fourth-place finish as a team and the men finished fifth, competing against local squads in Gonzaga, Big Sky Conference foe Idaho, hosts Washington State and Spokane Community College.

Eastern Washington competes next at the Mike Johnson Classic in Monmouth, Ore., on Sept. 24.
