Eastern Washington women's tennis began its 2022-23 schedule at home, hosting the EWU Hidden Duals from Friday, Sep. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2.

At the tournament, Eastern competed in singles and doubles matches against Idaho, Montana and Seattle U.

"Our home tournament was a really good start to the season," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "As a team, we were able to build and get better throughout the weekend, which was a big goal going in. There were some first match jitters on the first day, but we really made some strides on Saturday and showed what kind of talent we bring to the courts this season. Each doubles team was able to get a good win throughout the weekend. Our energy was definitely the best I have seen it in a long time during the last round of doubles on Saturday. I saw a lot of growth in singles competition from each player as the weekend went on."

Day 1
During the first day of competition, Eastern played Idaho in doubles. In the number three spot, Isabella Foshee and Sara Vasic won their match, 7-6, earning a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker.

In the singles round, Eastern would face Montana in six matchups. Renata Gabuzyan and Kenzington Mann earned wins in their respective matches. Gabuzyan defeated Ali Hietala, 6-2 6-2, while Mann won 6-3, 6-2 over Rosie Sterk.

Day 2
On the second day of the Hidden Duals, Eastern played doubles against both Seattle and Montana.

Against the Redhawks, Kenzington Mann and Renata Gabuzyan knocked off Elena Kraleva and Marija Elenova in the number one spot, 7-6, winning the tie breaker, 7-4. Following the doubles matches with Seattle, Eastern went against the Griz. Leandra Nizetic and Taylor Andersen controlled their matchup in the number two spot, winning 6-1 over Ivayla Mitkova and Nancy Cabanas.

The Eagles would then face the Redhawks again, this time in the singles competition with five matches.

In the number one match, Nizetic defeated Mireia Fehr 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

Isabella Foshee would rout Shuanghui Huang 6-0, 6-0 in the number six match.

Day 3
The final day of the Hidden Duals had Eastern playing four singles matches against Idaho. In the number four spot, Isabella Foshee defeated Lena Beckx, 6-0, 6-3.  

"I saw a lot of great things in our newcomers, [Sara] Vasic and [Leandra] Nizetic, along with [Taylor] Andersen. They have definitely added depth and strength to our returning lineup," Hinson added. "Early season injuries were definitely an issue on the last day. Our major goal this next week is to get healthy and be ready to give our best at the Stanford tournament in two weeks. I'm excited for the rest of the Fall season. Our Team energy is great and I'm proud of the effort we give each and every day we step on the court."
 
Up Next
Eastern Washington will travel to Stanford, Calif. on Friday, Oct. 14 for the ITA Northwest Regional. The regionals concluded on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
