Eagles Get Back on the Road to Face Redhawks

Eastern Washington will play two games over the next three days

Eastern Washington women's basketball will be heading to the west side of the state on Tuesday, Dec. 13 to play Seattle U. Eastern will play the Redhawks at 6 p.m. Pacific Time in Seattle, Wash.

Last Time Out
Eastern Washington defeated Tarleton State this past Saturday (Dec. 10) at Reese Court, 65-45. The defensive effort from the Eagles was the story of the game, as they held the Texans nearly 24 points under their scoring average. Eastern held Tarleton St. to 25.5 percent shooting in the game and 17.6 percent from three-point range. Comparatively, the Eagles shot 42.6 percent from the floor.

Jamie Loera piled up the stats in the win, scoring 13 points on 5-of-13(38.4%) shooting. The Moses Lake, Wash. native also led the team with five steals and had eight rebounds in the game. Aaliyah Alexander led the team in scoring with 14 points on 5-of-11(45.5%) shooting. Jaleesa Lawrence was effective on both ends of the court, recording her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The rebound total was a career-high for Lawrence.

A Look at the Eagles
Eastern is 5-2 this season, with a 1-1 record on the road and 4-1 at home, with three non-conference games left on the schedule. The Eagles have a plus-15.3 scoring margin to lead the Big Sky, carrying the second-ranked scoring offense (73.9) and third-ranked scoring defense (58.3). Through seven games, Eastern is averaging 15.9 assists per game and has a 1.32 assist-to-turnover ratio, both of which lead the conference. The team has the top turnover margin, as well, at plus-7.71. Eastern has forced 15 or more turnovers in six of its seven games. The turnover margin is helped by the Eagles averaging 11.6 steals per game, with 81 total this season.

Since joining the Eagles, Jamie Loera contributes across the board ranking second on the team with 11.7 points per game and 5.7 rebounds. Loera leads the team with 30 assists and 23 steals. On the Big Sky leaderboards, Loera is listed among the top players in assists (4th) points (15th) and rebounds (14th). Loera leads the conference in steals (3.3) and has the top assist-to-turnover ratio (2.5).

The scoring load is carried by Jaydia Martin, as she leads the team and ranks ninth in the Big Sky with 14.3 points per game. Martin has worked to be more efficient shooting the ball and she ranks third in the conference with a 42.9 three-point shooting percentage. Martin is also the ninth-ranked free throw shooter, with a 77.8 percentage from the line.

Jacinta Buckley leads the effort in the paint for the Eagles, with 6.6 rebounds and seven blocks. Buckley is 10th in the conference in rebounds per game and ninth in blocks per game. The junior contributes 11.4 points for the third-best mark on the team and 18th in the Big Sky.

Eastern has no shortage of offensive options, as Aaliyah Alexander and Jaleesa Lawrence both average 9.1 points per game.  

Scouting the Redhawks
Seattle U is winless so far this season, with a 0-8 record, 0-3 at home and 0-5 on the road. The Redhawks lost to CSU-Northridge on Saturday (Dec. 10), 90-97. The team has played two other Big Sky schools, losing to both Portland State (73-80) and Weber State (51-64). Seattle averages 56.5 points per game, while allowing 75.5 to opponents. From the floor, the Redhawks are shooting 34.0 percent and 31.6 percent from behind the arc. The team has a minus-5.8 rebound margin and minus-6.6. turnover margin.

Junior guard Peyton Howard leads Seattle with 9.0 points per game, while shooting 32.9 percent. Howard is also leading the team in rebounds (4.6) and assists (2.3). Junior forward Irena Korolenko adds 8.0 points per game on 38.7 percent shooting.  

Series History
Eastern is 1-2 against Seattle in program history, with a 1-1 record in Cheney and 0-1 on the road. The teams played on Dec. 19, 2020 in Cheney, with the Redhawks winning, 77-65.
