CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team hosted South Dakota today for its home opener and dropped the decision 5-2 at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse. The Eagles outplayed the Coyotes in doubles play, but fell short in singles as their record now sits at 0-3 overall.
"I'm proud of the team effort we put in today. These are the kind of matches we need to be playing early in the season. It was very much like a conference match and every match was very close," said head coach
Dustin Hinson. "That's what we need to prepare us for tough tight conference matches this season. I'm very proud the the fight and no quit we had in every match. We had some windows of opportunity to be more aggressive in some of the matches, and we need to be able to execute when we get those types of shots."
Yasmin Mansouri and
Isabella Foshee teamed up at the No. 1 doubles spot to take down the visitors, 6-1. Sophomore
Renata Gabuzyan doubled up with
Jennifer Kida at No.3 to finish doubles play with a 6-4 win.
"We had some really bright spots in doubles today and I was very happy with the way we came out to get the doubles point. I'm also really happy for freshman,
Kenzington Mann," added Hinson. "She picked up her second win in a row and did it in impressive fashion by coming from behind and finishing strong in her match at number five singles. If we can match this type of intensity and desire to fight and be gritty when our backs are against the wall, we can do some great things as a team this season. I'm excited for what's to come. We will look to get healthy and put in some good work next week before we hit the road for another good test at Oregon."
Mann, a freshman from Tustin, Calif., also found success in a comeback win at the No. 5 singles spot after falling in the first set, 6-4, before winning the final two sets.
