PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Eastern Washington University women's golf team returned to the golf course for the first time this year as they competed in the Grand Canyon Invitational, finishing tied for 17th-place at the GCU Championship Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz. The Eagles shot 319 strokes in the first round, 312 in the second, and finished the third round strong with 304 strokes for a total score of 935.
Additionally, in today's final round, the Eagles out-shot 10 other schools, including Boise State and Gonzaga, as well as Big Sky programs Idaho, Portland State and Montana State.
"We had a great round today. I believe our best of the 2021/2022 season," said head coach
Brenda Howe. "It's always hard coming from winter and having to post scores when you haven't played golf since October, and the entire field doesn't fight winter, or has at least one or two events under their belts this spring.
Jaelin Ishikawa and
Meghan Singh played outstanding today, and after a last minute equipment change,
Kami Twining was able to turn things around today."
Tournament host Grand Canyon won the tournament shooting 860 strokes while Santa Clara (865) and SMU (866) finished one stroke apart from each other to place second and third. Seattle (877) and UC Riverside (884) finished ahead of Big Sky foe Northern Arizona (892) while Gonzaga (896) and Idaho (897) followed in seventh and eighth place, respectively. The Grand Canyon B team (901) finished in ninth, with North Dakota State (902) and Big Sky opponent Southern Utah (902) rounding out the 10th-place spot in a tie. Â
The Eagles tied with Montana State (935) but were ahead of CSU Bakersfield by 29 strokes and Dixie State by 32 strokes.
