The Eastern Washington University track and field team split squads this weekend and concluded the final day, today (Mar. 25) of the Buc Scoring / Combined Events Meet in Spokane, Wash., at the Whitworth Pine Bowl. The other half of the squad competed at the Al Manuel Invitational in Missoula, Mont., at Dornblaser Field.

Two women from the Eastern track and field team competed in the heptathlon today. Maggie Nelson placed first in the heptathlon with 5,130 points. This set a new Eastern Washington University school record. The previous record of 4,857 was set in 2017 by Kendra Hamm. Nelson is the first Eagle in program history to ever score over 5,000 points in the heptathlon, and she also owns the indoor pentathlon school record.

"Nelson had a great heptathlon competition. Competing in the first heptathlon of the outdoor season she set a new school record.  In addition, as part of the heptathlon competition she threw the javelin a personal record 158-8. She has a great shot of getting into the NCAA West Regional meet with that mark. You couldn't ask for a better start to your outdoor season than achieving those two goals," stated head women's coach Marcia Mecklenburg.

The heptathlon events that concluded today were the heptathlon long jump, the heptathlon javelin, and the heptathlon 800-meter.

In the heptathlon long jump, Nelson placed first with a mark of 18-3 1/4. In the heptathlon javelin she placed first with a mark of 158-8. Then in the heptathlon 800-meter she placed second with a time of 2:29.44.

"Nelson's performance the last two days was truly phenomenal. Not only did she break the Eastern Washington University school record by about 300 points, these points posted a mark in the javelin which will qualify her for the NCAA West Regional meet," explained jumps and multi-events coach Dave Nielsen.

Hayden McAuliff placed fourth in the heptathlon with a total of 4,101 points.

McAuliff placed third in the heptathlon long jump with a mark of 17-3 1/2. In the heptathlon javelin throw she placed sixth with a mark of 96-10. In the heptathlon 800-meter she placed third with a time of 2:30.60.
