CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's tennis squad hosted Montana State today and battled to a 5-2 victory in Cheney. The Eagles extend their winning streak to three matches, two of which in Big Sky Conference play, while the squad holds an overall 3-6 record and is 2-0 in conference.
"This was another gutsy, hard-fought win for the team today. I'm happy to see the heart and the desire that each player brought to the court," said head coach
Dustin Hinson. "I'm very pleased with the way we played smart and aggressive tennis in our matches. We stuck to the way we play the game and we believed we could come out on top. We had that killer instinct and never say die mentality all weekend. That's something to be proud of and I'm hoping that the belief and confidence can just keep growing with this team as we see this kind of success."
After falling 6-3 at the No. 1 doubles spot, the Eagles came back to take the doubles point following a grinding 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot and a 6-2 win at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, the Eagles made the ultimate comeback after losing the No. 1 and No. 2 singles points to fall behind 2-1.
Scout Mathews defeated her opponent in a three-set battle, and then
Isabella Foshee,
Renata Gabuzyan and
Kenzington Mann found victory, each taking down their opponent in two sets.
"This was a rewarding weekend for all of the bumps and bruises we've been fighting through so far this season," stated Hinson. "We are going to keep putting in the time on the training court to keep improving. This is a great start, and we are hungry to keep it rolling this season."
