Scout Mathews Selected as Co-Big Sky Tennis Player of the Week

The sophomore went 4-0 over the weekend to help Eastern Washington win its first two conference openers at home

FARMINGTON, Utah – Eastern Washington University women's tennis player Scout Mathews has earned Co-Big Sky Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week! Mathews shares the honor with senior Melissa Huchet from Idaho, as announced by the league office this afternoon (March 8).

It's the second conference honor of her career after she was honored during her freshman year after battling back from a set down to help Eastern Washington win its 2021 conference opener against rival Idaho.

Mathews picked up a win at No. 3 doubles and No. 3 singles, helping the Eagles beat Montana 4-3 to open Big Sky play with a victory at home on Saturday, March 5.

The next day, Mathews collected two more wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 3 singles against Montana State to help continue EWU's winning streak.

"I'm really happy that Scout Mathews is being recognized for her efforts this past weekend. She's battled through some tough injuries so far this season so it's really nice to have her back in the lineup," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "To fight through and get the wins even when you're not physically 100% and when you haven't been able to train the normal amount is just a big testament to Scout's will to help the team any way she can. She is such a tough competitor, and she loves to be out there on court. I'm really proud of her and I'm excited to keep building on what she has accomplished already in the conference season."

Mathews hails from Honolulu, Hawai'i and has a 3-2 overall singles record this season, with a three-match winning streak attached. She has primarily played at No. 3 doubles, teaming up for a 2-0 record with fellow sophomore Jennifer Kida plus 1-1 at No. 2 doubles with Kenzington Mann.

The two victories helped EWU continue its three-match winning streak and begin Big Sky play 2-0 to improve to 3-6 overall. It also marked Eastern's fourth-straight victory over Montana, and third-straight win over Montana State. The Eagles are now tied for first with Idaho and Weber State in conference play.

Eastern Washington will travel to Pocatello, Idaho for a conference battle against Idaho State this Friday at 1 p.m. Pacific Time.
