Eastern Washington women's soccer was feeling it on Friday night, as they overwhelmed Yakima Valley Community College in an 8-0 victory. The exhibition match had the Eagles scoring six goals in the first half and two in the second, giving the team its second straight shutout.
"I feel great, and it feels awesome to have a solid win under us going into the season," senior
Mya Elder-Hammond said. "We had a lot of freshman, and everyone put up some big numbers, along with getting a lot of playing time."
"It's exciting to see our freshman come up and then see everyone work as a team," sophomore
Katrina Kupp added. "It's great to have everyone do their part for the team."
Eight different Eagles scored against the Yaks and the team had a 31-2 shot advantage.
The first strike for Eastern came less than a minute into the match, as
Elisabeth Cole dribbled into the box and fired a shot past the goalie.
Maddie Morgan then scored a minute-and-a-half later, off a high feed from
Grace Terrill.
Kupp would find the net in the 23
rd minute on a pass from
Riley Arribas. "It feels good and I'm excited to get [two] goals early," Kupp said. "I'm hopeful and excited to participate to get more goals this season."
Skyler Matthews would take the pass from
Lyric Baker and knock in the team's fourth goal of the night. Off a pass from Kupp,
Candace Carlson would aim her header perfectly and put the team up 5-0. Yakima Valley would misplay a ball inside the box that resulted in an own goal. The Eagles had a 6-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the match settled into battle of possession between the Eagles and Yaks. Eastern would continue to find opportunities to score, recording 15 shots in the half.
Elder-Hammond put the Eagles up seven at the 71
st minute mark, finding the back of the net on the feed from
Corina Froehle. "I turned quickly and could get one off pretty easily, which was nice to get an easy to the back corner. I always try to score on the back post," Elder-Hammond said.
Baker would make it 8-0 only a minute-and-a-half later, assisted by Elder-Hammond from the back line.
Eastern managed maintain possession for 65-percent of the match and only kept the ball in the Yaks territory for 83.5-percent of the match. The Eagles managed to prevent a single shot on goal from Yakima and held them without a shot in the second half.
In the two exhibition matches, Eastern scored 11 goals and did not concede any to their opponents.
