EWU adds do-it-all transfer guard Nic McClain

Junior college standout from Florida is headed to Cheney

CHENEY, Wash. — Nic McClain, a transfer from Daytona State College in Florida, has committed to the Eastern Washington University men's basketball team for the 2023-24 season, as announced by head coach David Riley on Tuesday.

"Nic has an incredible IQ and feel for the game," said Riley. "His energy, toughness and swagger along with his court vision and finishing ability will help our team immediately."

A 6-foot-4, 195-pound guard, McClain averaged 10.5 points, 3.5 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Daytona State, which competes in the Mid-Florida Conference of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and finished the season with a 27-3 record, winning the regular season conference championship.

He finished the season particularly strong, averaging 16.8 points, 6.9 rebounds and 4 assists per game over the final eight, including two 24-point performances and a 16-and-11 double-double in early February. He shot 48% from the field on the season and was named All-Conference First Team.

The Falcons lost in the quarterfinals of their conference tournament but McClain was still named to the DI FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 All-Tournament Team after posting 15 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals and 2 blocks in the one game.

"He can play the point or on the wing," Riley added. "He is an aggressive defender, a great passer, super efficient finisher and will knock down 3's. A guy who should be able to fill up every category of the stat sheet."

Originally from Jennings, Fla., McClain spent his freshman year at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Fla., also competing in the NJCAA Mid-Florida Conference. He attended Suwannee High School.

His older brother Kevin was a standout at Belmont University, where he was an all-conference player, notably leading the Bruins to an NCAA Tournament win over Temple in 2019. Kevin went on to play in the NBA Summer League for Golden State before heading overseas, where he now plays in France's top league.

Nic McClain will join Eastern as a junior with two years of eligibility remaining.
