AUSTIN, Texas — Eastern Washington University jumper
Bobby Say wrapped up a special season and tremendous NCAA career on Friday night in Austin, Texas, competing for the final time at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. As one of the top 24 qualifiers in the country, he earned All-American Honorable Mention honors.
"I appreciate 'Big Jump Bob' for being who he is. He had a great season to top off a great career," said EWU Director of Track and Field Erin Tucker. "Storybook ending to your career by finishing it in your first and last NCAA Championship meet!"
Say did not set a legal mark on Friday night, but became just the 3rd Eagle men's track and field competitor to reach Nationals since 2010 and 24th overall — men's or women's — in program history. He finished 6th at the West Regional in Sacramento to qualify for the final competition against the best of the best in collegiate athletics.
"I am proud of him and he is type of athlete we want and need here as we move this program forward," Tucker added. "(Coach Jonina Brinson) did and amazing job with him and this is just the beginning!"
The Maple Valley, Wash. native leaves a legacy at Eastern that includes the 4th-longest outdoor triple jump in program history (15.84 meters), set on his second attempt at Regionals this season. He also ranks 6th on EWU's all-time list in the outdoor long jump (7.46m), 2nd in the indoor triple (15.96m) and 6th in the indoor long (7.35m).
As far as hardware, Say walks away with several Big Sky Championship podium finishes, earning silver outdoors and gold indoors in the triple this season. He also finished 2nd in both the triple and long jump at the 2022 Big Sky Indoor Championships, and 3rd outdoors in 2019.
A standout student who earned several academic honors including Big Sky All-Academic and CSC Academic All-District this season, Say will graduate from Eastern with a degree in business administration and expects to begin his business career early next week.
