School record from 1978 falls as Eags wrap up weekend in Moscow

Higgins bests rarely-raced 600-meter time, EWU continues indoor track and field campaign

MOSCOW, Idaho — The Eastern Washington Track and Field team wrapped up their second meet weekend of the new year on Saturday at the 2024 Lauren McCluskey Memorial hosted by the University of Idaho.

"A good ol' round trip down the Palouse," said Director of Track and Field Erin Tucker. "It's always good to get on the road to see how the team handles competition away from home. We learned some lessons and we challenged ourselves these last two days."

Freshman Owen Higgins highlighted Eastern's weekend on Saturday, breaking a 46-year-old Eastern Washington record with a 1:20.80 in the 600 meters, a full second faster than Dan Butler's mark (1:21.6) from 1978. The time is rarely challenged as the 600 meters is not often raced in collegiate competitions any longer, but it is held in the Kibbie Dome each year.

"I was happy to see the obscure 600-meter school record finally go down after 46 years," continued Tucker. "Even though Owen broke it by a full second, we both know it should have been faster and will be next year for sure."

"The Kibbie Dome is a great place to compete and we are thankful for the Idaho staff for always putting on a great meet."

Other notable performances for the Eags included Takiyah Blue moving into 8th in EWU history in the women's 400 meters with a 57.33 finish. Grace Bruno won the women's high jump in Moscow, clearing 1.71 meters (5' 7.25"), good for 6th in program history.

"We are back on the road again next weekend and this time we head to the west side to face even stiffer competition," Tucker noted. "We are thankful to the University of Washington for inviting us over. We will learn more about who we are and I am looking forward to it."

EWU will compete at the University of Washington Invitational on Jan. 26 and 27.
