EWU Women’s Tennis find their footing after the fall season

(Eagles traveled to San Diego to wrap up fall play)

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After traveling next door in the Gonzaga Invitational a couple of weeks ago, Eastern Washington Women's Tennis concluded their fall tournament season in the SDSU Fall Classic II, in San Diego, California.

The tournament was Eastern's third of the fall season. Head coach Dustin Hinson was very pleased with the improvement he saw from the team as the weekend progressed.

"Yeah it was a good weekend. It's a great tournament down there. A lot of teams we don't typically see a lot, and we played different competitions. I think the best thing was how we got better each day from Friday to Sunday to finish with our best day on Sunday," Hinson said.

The Eagles were able to play outdoors, after playing indoors in their previous tournament. Hinson said the different environments they have been playing in this fall, has been important for the team's development.

"A lot of it is just transitioning from playing indoor tennis, which we've done the last 3 to 4 weeks, back to outdoor tennis. It's a very different game. It's slower outside and you just have a different rhythm. Longer points, that kind of thing, so transitioning and getting used to that early on, then transitioning to playing better towards the end, was great."

As a team, the Eagles have recorded 15 singles wins in their three tournaments played. This weekend, Seniors Isabella Foshee and Kenzington Mann impressed again in a great showing in the singles open bracket.

"I think our strong suits were the seniors again with our doubles Isabella and Kenzington Mann who won two out of their three matches finished really strong and are playing really well together."

In the top singles open bracket, Foshee would step up again for Eastern, putting up a competitive outing for the Eagles. For the season, Foshee has recorded five singles wins, and two doubles wins with other senior Kenzington Mann.

"She had a really close match in her first round against the top San Diego State player, started cramping and had a critical moment in the second set, wasn't able to pull that one out, but played really well so happy with where she has gone with her game."

The fall has been great for the Eagles. Hinson said he is pleased with team chemistry, and certain players stepping up into a leadership role and to carry that into the spring season

"Overall for the fall, I am happy with the senior leadership. Leading both on and off the court. I think the team dynamic is great, and because of that leadership we have a great team culture that really works hard. All the time they show great attitude and great energy, and they want to get better and want to compete. Those are all things that I love seeing and I think it will be good for us as we move into the season starting in January. I am looking forward to getting back out on the court in January and our team competition."
