Eagles drop weekend matches to Redhawks, Lobos

Eastern Washington had a home and neutral site match this weekend

2/11/2024 1:12:00 PM

CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington women's tennis spent the weekend at home and close to home, playing Seattle U in Cheney on Saturday and New Mexico in Spokane today. The Eagles dropped both matches, falling 4-3 to the Redhawks and 4-1 to the Lobos. Eastern is now 0-6 on the season.

"We had some good, hard fought matches this weekend, which is definitely what we need at this stage of the season. Our doubles play is getting better and I was really happy to get the doubles point against Seattle on Saturday," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "We showed a lot of grit in singles and came up just short in the team scores each day, but we had some really strong performances this weekend. [Leandra] Nizetic and [Kelly] Arends had good wins against Seattle, while [Isabella] Foshee played a really great, dominating match against New Mexico to win. I was also pleased with the fight that both our seniors [Jennifer Kida and Scout Mathews] showed out there this weekend. Even if you don't come out on top, they showed that you can still lead with great energy and determination to leave everything on the court. We had a couple of unfinished matches against New Mexico where we were playing really well. Our newcomers, [Anait] Arutiunian and Arends were neck-in-neck with their opponents and they were playing really good tennis. Overall, we grew as a team this weekend and we are building where we can after each match. If we continue this and pour our focus into process and hard work, we know the results will take care of themselves."

EWU had two wins in the doubles round against Seattle at the No. 1 and No. 1 spots. Scout Mathews and Isabella Foshee started with a 6-3 win over Elena Kraleva and Jade Quintana at the top spot. Eastern then secured the point after Anait Arutiunian and Jennifer Kida defeated Liliya Dimova and Yuna Kadowaki, 6-3.

Leandra Nizetic earned a singles win, at No. 5, against the Redhawks' Quintana in commanding fashion, losing only one game (6-0, 6-1). Kelly Arends had a marathon battle against Kadowaki at the No. 6 singles, winning the tie breaker 10-6 to get the point.

Against the Lobos, Foshee earned a win over Leonie Hoppe in the No. 5 position. Foshee took the first set 6-1 and the second 6-2.
