SPOKANE, Wash. — Eastern Washington track and field opened with an exclamation point for its 2024 Outdoor season at the Sam Adams Classic, hosted by Whitworth. The Eagles had a pair of records broken and racked up the podium spots in the field events on Saturday.

Caitlin Simmons picked up where she left off indoors to break the school record in the triple jump followed by a school record in the long jump. But will not go down as the school record holder in the as "Tuti"

Erin Tucker recalled. "What a great 1-2 punch Coach Jo has there as both ladies broke the previous school record in the long jump. What an amazing 1-2 punch for us, the first two ladies over 20 feet in the long jump in school history! Wow!"
Simmons broke an EWU program-record in the women's triple jump after a 12.59m mark to take the top spot. The previous mark was 12.54m from Morena Manucci in 2015.
Smith broke the women's long jump record
with a 6.27m performance. Simmons followed in second with a 6.18m jump for the second-best mark in Eastern history. Kailee Kellum placed third with a 5.55m mark.
As expected, Zach Klobutcher won the men's pole vault after posting a 4.78m mark.
Madelyn Knight topped her personal best in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.52. Knight replaced her own time on the Eastern all-time top 10 lists, maintaining the No. 8 ranking.
Sydney Thweatt finished behind Knight in third, posting a 1:08.94 time.
Grace Bruno, competing in the women's high jump, placed second after clearing the bar at 1.69m. The mark ties for seventh on the program's all-time list.
Going to the men's shot put, Bradley Fillis separated from the pack after a 16.12m throw. Mason Moore had a 14.53m throw to place second.
Fillis added a second-place finishes in the hammer throw (54.16m) and discus throw (46.95m)
Eastern dominated in the women's pole vault as Kelsey Lovercheck placed first with a 3.65m mark. Hannah Watson (3.50m) and Rosalie Folger-Vent (3.50m) placed second and third respectively.
The Eagles swept the women's hammer throw, as Dyvhine Fonoti took first with a 52.49m toss. Kahlani Schloss was second (48.96m) and Dyvhon Fonoti in third (47.66m).
In the discus throw, Dyvhine delivered with a 44.17m mark to take first. Dyvhon earned third after a 38.71m throw.
Dyvhine followed up with a 13.22m throw in the shot put, placing her second overall.
The Eagles won the women's 4x400m race with a time of 4:00.92. The win was led by Knight, Rhiannon Davies, Faith Martinez and Kaylin Sheley.
EWU's men's 4x400m team also grabbed first, finishing with a time of 3:23.33. Contributing to the victory was Dalton Wild, Kris Phennicie, Owen Higgins and Lucas Robert.
Higgins later placed third in the 1500m race, finishing with a time of 3:55.39.
Competing in men's javelin, Ryan Rieckmann had a 64.83m mark to take second on the leaderboard. Rieckmann moves into 10th on the programs top performance list after his performance today.
In the women's 800m, Sara Sanders placed second after a 2:17.09 pace. Sheley placed third with a time of 2:17.61.
A pair of sophomores delivered for Eastern in the men's 400m. Phennicie and Dalton Wild went two-three in the event, with times of 49.59 and 49.99 respectively.
Nic Cunningham grabbed a third-place finish in the men's triple jump with a 13.72m mark.
Charlie Ledwith ran the men's 5000m in 15:23.49 for a third-place finish.
"We have some over 10 PRs, 8 wins today, and a bunch of new additions to the top-10 list. So I can say "today was a good day," Tucker added. "Madi the Magnificent was one of three event winners along with Egypt & Tuti to PR today. Great opener for sure! How about the weather? We could not have asked for a better day in Mid-March! Our goal after indoor is to just get better every day, every meet, keep challenging ourselves, and be at our best mentally when we get to Bozeman in Mid-May!"

Eastern will split its squad this week, sending the team to the Oregon Preview on Friday, concluding on Saturday. The team will also compete at the Buc Scoring Meet in Spokane on Thursday through Friday.
