‘Jacks down Eagles in singles

Eastern Washington lost its conference matchup against Northern Arizona

3/29/2024 2:41:00 PM

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Eastern Washington women's tennis traveled down south to play Northern Arizona on Friday morning. Eastern fell against the Lumberjacks, 6-1, after dropping the six singles matches. EWU is now 1-4 in the Big Sky and 3-13 overall.

"Today we really played some excellent doubles. We did a good job of playing aggressively, early in the point, and that led to some nice wins to secure the doubles point," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "We played with good intensity in singles play, but credit to NAU for playing well when they needed to."

The Eagles started the match in control, winning two doubles matches to secure a 1-0 lead. Isabella Foshee and Scout Mathews extended their winning streak with a 6-4 victory over Daryna Shoshyna and Dolavee Tumthong at the No. 1 spot. In the No. 2 match, Anait Arutiunian and Jennifer Kida defeated Laura Duhl and Pat Niewiadomska, 6-3.

Despite the hot start, the 'Jacks surged ahead with a sweep of the singles matches. Leandra Nizetic battled in three sets at No. 5 against Tumthong, but fell 6-2 in the third. Foshee faced Ava Neyestani at No. 6, but could not punch through in the third set, losing 10-7.
