Eastern dropped five singles matches after opening with the doubles point

3/8/2024 8:09:00 PM

PORTLAND, Ore. — Eastern Washington women's tennis started its road trip on Friday, meeting the Portland Pilots on the court. Eastern dropped the match, 5-2, as the Pilots won five of six singles matches to secure the match. The Eagles are now 3-9 on the season.

"We had a really good performance today, starting with our doubles play. We were able to play our brand of doubles and we came away with the point against a really good Portland team. I'm really proud of that effort," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "Singles was a good battle and I thought we did a good job of finding our rhythm early and working with good confidence and composure on court. Kelly Arends played a really strong match at number five singles and was able to win it in three sets. That was an awesome win for her. We are feeling good mentally and looking forward to a battle on Sunday."

Eastern secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots. At two, Anait Arutiunian and Jennifer Kida marched to a 6-4 win over Aleksandra Dimitrijevic and Meagan Pearson. In the No. 3 matchup, Kenzington Mann and Leandra Nizetic outlasted Alaia Rubio Perez and Arbaizar Martinez, 7-6, winning the tie breaker.

With EWU up 1-0 in the match. Portland picked up wins in singles at No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. The five wins gave the Pilots the match victory.

Kelly Arends posted a win at No. 5, battling to a three-set win, clinching the point in the tiebreaker (4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8)).
