Eagles grab wins, podium spots at Cougar Classic

Eastern Washington spent Saturday in Pullman

PULLMAN, Wash. — Eastern Washington track and field traveled down the road on Saturday to compete in the Cougar Classic, hosted by Washington State. The Eagles turned in a good performance, winning multiple events and adding numerous podium spots. 

"What a great day to compete down in the Palouse! Today was one of the best days we have seen in the PNW all year and those that competed took advantage of it for sure," Director of Track and Field Erin Tucker said. "Solid marks across the board today in all areas. It was great seeing everyone compete hard and continue prepping for our trip to Bozeman in three weeks!"


Dyvhine Fonoti won the hammer throw, posting a 51.55m mark. Bailey Young placed third with a 49.87m throw. In shot put, Dyvhine followed up with a second-place finish after a mark of 13.25m. 

Lucas Couron followed up his strong performance last week with a win in the pole vault in Pullman. Couron won with a 4.90m mark.

Nattie Ruzauskas took first in the 1500m, recording a time of 4:40.28.

In long jump, Kimberly Smith turned in a second-place performance with a jump of 5.79m.

Dyvhon Fonoti placed third in discus after a 42.26m toss. 

Moving to triple jump, Nic Cunningham grabbed second with a 13.57m mark. 

Rusty Lee placed third in the 400m hurdles, clocking a time of 55.52 seconds.

In the 3000m steeplechase, Jamie Christner earned third with a time of 10:16.54 minutes.

Bradley Fillis grabbed third in hammer throw, posting a 55.69m mark. Fillis then added a third-place finish in the shot put after a 16.07m. 

In women's pole vault, Kelsey Lovercheck and Suzi Woodall tied for third after a 3.79m mark. 

The women's 4x400m placed third, as Rhiannon Davies, Amanda Nygard, Kaylin Sheley and Sara Sanders recorded a 4:15.52 time.

Eastern Washington will close out the regular season next week with two meets. EWU will compete at the Oregon State High Performance Meet in Corvallis, Ore. from April 26-27, while the team also sends a group to the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
