SAAC announces officers for 2024-25

Rhiannon Davies named EWU and Big Sky representative for SAAC

7/1/2024 1:16:00 PM

CHENEY, Wash. — With classes now complete, the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) has named its officers its executive board for 2024-25.

In the upcoming academic year, Rhiannon Davies was elected as the SAAC president and women's basketball's Breeje Schuler will serve as vice president.

Adding to her titles, Davies was appointed to serve as the Big Sky's representative at the national level for  Division I SAAC.

Davies talked about why she chose to pursue the SAAC presidency, "What drove me to apply for the presidency was the need to continue what Grace Terrill and the rest of our SAAC executive board started this past year. Since I joined SAAC two years ago, I have seen us make progress in our community presence and form our culture around the student-athlete experience. We got the ball rolling but a lot of our core individuals are moving onto new chapters of their lives. It's up to the rest of us to continue the traditions we began and implement new ones. Being president gives me the opportunity to do just that."

Davies is going into her senior year and competes for both the cross country and track teams. She has primarily competed in the 800m and 4x400m in the indoor and outdoor track seasons. Schuler, a junior next season, appeared in 17 games this season playing 5.1 minutes per game.

Cheer's Brayden Thrift will act as the SAAC secretary, while Katelyn Storme will serve as the Alumni Coordinator. Thrift will be a sophomore this fall and Strome will be a senior.

Women's soccer holds two posts next year, as Ryanne Ampi will work as SAAC's event coordinator, along with Sage Reed working as the social media coordinator.

Ampi will be a junior in the fall and she has made three starts and appeared in 12 matches, with a total 454 minutes of playing time as a defender. Reed, preparing for her sophomore season, started 13 games with 17 appearances, recording one assist totaling three shots in 2023.

With the new officers in place, Davies has a clear vision for what she wants to accomplish in the upcoming academic year, "Our main focus is going to be streamline communication within the university, the Big Sky, and the NCAA. We want to touch as many points of campus as we can and create cohesiveness between students, faculty and athletes. This will include working with the Diversity Equity and Inclusion office, while encouraging Eagle pride in athletics and the classroom. We want our athlete's voices to extend outside of campus. As president, my goal is to have our athletes share their ideas with other universities. This will allow us to learn from our athletic competitors to enhance the student-athlete experience."
