Grossman Posts Double-Double, but Eastern Drops Road Contest at CSUB

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Eastern Washington women's basketball took on Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, closing out their two-game California road trip. Eastern fell to CSUB 85-72 after the Runners offense found its stride in the second half. The Eags record moves to 6-6. CSUB improves to 5-7 on the year.

"We are disappointed with the result of tonight's game," head coach Joddie Gleason said. "CSU Bakersfield out played us and executed better than us in every facet of the game. We will use the break to figure out how to get more consistent production offensively and what we need to do to hold teams to our defensive standard."

The Runners had the dominance on the board, with 45 rebounds. Across the game, Eastern shot 36.1% from the floor while CSUB shot 45%.

"Kourtney Grossman and Ella Gallatin both played well again today and anchored our team on the court and in the huddles." Gleason added.

Kourtney Grossman led Eastern in scoring with 21 points as well as 17 rebounds and Ella Gallatin was right behind with 18 points.

The Eagles were not deterred by an early offensive push by the Runners as they went on a quick 9-2 run. Eastern quickly answered back with a 5-0 run of their own to put themselves within 3. Kourtney Grossman closed out on the Roadrunner lead, shooting 5-8 with 13 points and 9 rebounds. The quarter continued to go back and forth ending in a gap of 2 with a buzzer beater lay in for Bella Hayes.

The second quarter proved to be much of the same going score for score through the quarter. After an Eagle score with 1:59 on the clock, the Roadrunners would find a 4-0 run of their own. CSUB would match Eastern with a buzzer beater lay in of their own. At the half, EWU trailed 28-34, shooting 31.4%.

The teams continued their back and forth battle through the third. Caitie Gingras got hot from three, finding two quickly. The Eagles closed the quarter shooting 25.0%. Gingras scored 6, followed by Jaecy Eggers with 5. CSUB finished the quarter with a 42.9 shooting percentage. After three quarters, Eastern trailed 42-53.

In the fourth quarter, the Runners barrage from three gave them a 19 point lead. Eastern however, did not stop, with Gallatin and Bowers closing the gap for the Eags. Gingras fouling out ended up fizzling out the offensive push from Eastern. EWU found their best quarter offensively, shooting 57.1%, scoring 30 points. The Runners offense stayed consistent in the quarter, scoring 32 points on 77.8% shooting. CSUB went on to win the game 85-72.
