Eagles down Wildcats for first conference win

3/15/2025 3:18:00 PM

CHENEY, Wash. - After two months on the road, EWU defended home court to earn their first conference win of the season. A great showing from Eastern would give them a 4-3 victory over Weber State. The Eagles moved to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play, with Weber State dropping to 0-15 overall and 0-5 in Big Sky play this season

Eastern and Weber State faced off in their 30th all-time meeting. The Eagles moved to 8-22 over the Wildcats and avenged  last year's loss in Ogden 5-2. EWU won the previous time they hosted WSU when they won 4-3 in 2023. They moved 5-7 overall at home against the Wildcats.

In doubles dual-match play, Eastern recorded their third doubles win of the season.

Leandra Nizetic/Sara Vasic would represent the Eagles in the No. 2 doubles slot. The two would be able to build a 2-1 lead with their serve incoming. After winning a big fourth game to take a 3-1 advantage, and cruise to a 6-2 victory. The duo would win their first doubles dual-match of the season together, with Nizetic recording her 10th career doubles win, and her third career conference win. Vasic earned the second doubles win of her career, and her first career Big Sky conference win.

The freshman Zoe Pradel/Olivia Marais would represent the Eagles in the No. 3 position. After falling behind 1-0, the two responded by taking the next five games to take a 5-1 advantage. WSU's duo of Aleks Bozinovska/Alicia Morales would not go away quietly, winning the next two games to cut the deficit to two. The freshman were able to clinch the 6-3 victory in the next game, and clinch the doubles team point for the Eagles. It would be the second career doubles win for both freshmen, and the first conference win for both this season.

In the doubles No. 1 position for the Eagles, Isabella Foshee/Kenzington Mann were unable to stretch their early leads. Tied 3-3, Jessica Hill/Sydney Schnell would pull out the game seven win to take the 4-3 lead, and be able to take a 5-3 advantage before EWU clinched the doubles team point.

"Super happy about our doubles play. I thought we played really solid No. 2 and 3, with No. 1 being close. Their team was playing well, but really happy with No. 2 and 3 to come out and really dominate from the start to get the double point," head coach Dustin Hinson said.

For singles, Isabella Foshee would take the No. 1 position for the Eagles. Foshee jumped to a 3-0 lead. Sydney Schnell would be able to win a pair of games, but Foshee would close the door and win the first set 6-2. The match would end there, with Foshee earning the win due to Schnell retiring after the first set. With the win, Foshee moved to 2-0 in conference play this season, and to 4-4 overall on the season. Foshee earned her 21st career singles dual-match win, and her 11th career Big Sky win.

The junior Leandra Nizetic in the No. 2 position was able to use a 4-0 first set lead, and snagged a 6-1 first set victory. The second set would see a similar story for Nizetic. After a 3-0 lead, Nizetic would not look back and pulled out the 6-2 second set victory for her fourth win of the season, and moved to 2-1 in the No. 2 position. The win gave Nizetic her 14th of her career, and her sixth career Big Sky win.

Kenzington Mann would represent the Eagles in the No. 3 position. After dropping the first game, Mann was unable to take a lead as she would fall 6-2 in the first set. Mann would respond in the second set by taking a 3-0 lead. Jessica Hill would be able to regain her footing, winning three of the next four games to bring the deficit within one. Hill would be able to continue her climb and take the set 6-4 and win the match.

Zoe Pradel would see herself in the No. 4 position and take control of the pace of the match. After a 6-3 first set win, Pradel cruised again in the second to take the second set 6-0 and clinch the match. With the win, Pradel recorded her third singles dual-match win of the season, and moved to 2-0 in conference play.

In the No. 5 position for the Eagles, Olivia Marais looked to be in a zone and took a 3-0 lead in the first set. Marais would win the first set comfortably 6-1. Savannah Johnson would take an early 2-1 lead over Marais in the second set. The two would see the match even at 3-3 and 5-5 after Johnson would bounce back from a 5-3 deficit. After an exchange of games, the game would be decided with a tiebreaker. A back and forth affair saw ties at 3-3, 6-6, and 7-7 before Johnson was able to take the 7-6 (9-7) second set. In the 10-point tiebreaker, Johnson built a 6-2 advantage, but Marais would not go away. Down 9-4, Marais would win four straight, but the deficit would be too much to climb, as Johnson won the match and the tiebreaker 10-8.

Sara Vasic would round out the singles for the Eagles in the No. 6 position. After a 1-0 lead from Vasic, Aleks Bozinovska would rally four straight to regain the lead, and win the first set 6-2. The second set would be a tight one, with Bozinovska holding a 4-3 lead before pulling away with a 6-3 second set victory.

"The main thing we worked on today was to have that fight mentality. It doesn't matter what the score is, if you're up or you're down, you just have to battle for each point. Regardless of each individual's result, we were super happy as a team to get the team win. I think it is awesome and exciting, and we just hope to continue battling," Hinson said
