CHENEY, Wash. - The Eagles were unable to defend home court in their 7-0 loss to the Lumberjacks. EWU falls to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play, with Northern Arizona improving to 9-3 overall, and 4-0 in Big Sky play. The Eagles hosted the Lumberjacks for their 28th all-time meeting. NAU improved their advantage 26-2. This was the first home loss for Eastern, as they moved to 2-1 at home this season.
"I'm really proud of the team, as we played a tough team today in NAU. They have a great team and brought some good fights to the court. I was really happy with the way our team fought on the court from doubles all the way through singles," Head Coach Dustin Hinson said. "We were right there, very close and we played really well. In the No. 2 doubles spot, I'm really happy with the way Lea and Sara are playing together."
In the doubles No. 1 position for the Eagles, Isabella Foshee/Kenzington Mann and would see a 1-0 early deficit, and then another one 4-1. After winning two straight games, Daryna Shoshyna/Elen Jantacova would stop Eastern's momentum and regain a two game lead. That would be enough for NAU who would win the match 6-4
The freshman Zoe Pradel/Olivia Marais would represent the Eagles in the No. 3 position. Andrea Noguera/Leotina Stojanovic from Northern Arizona would be able to surge to a 4-1 lead. Winning two of the next three games, the freshman looked to tie the match 5-5. Andrea Noguera/Leotina Stojanovic from NAU would be able to use their early lead and close out a 6-3 victory and a Lumberjacks doubles point.
Leandra Nizetic/Sara Vasic would represent the Eagles in the No. 2 doubles slot. The duo would control the match and have leads early. With the match tied 3-3 and 4-4, Eastern would be able to regain the lead 5-4 before the match would be clinched by the Lumberjacks.
"In singles it was just a battle. I think we held our own and did everything that we could. We were really focusing on our belief and confidence. I felt like the fight was really good, and we fought the right way with integrity and left it all on the court. That is what we are always going to be here with Eastern tennis," Hinson said.
For singles, Isabella Foshee would again take the No. 1 position for the Eagles. Down 1-0, Foshee would rip off four quick games to take the 4-1 lead. Daryna Shoshyna would try to climb back, but Foshee would use her big lead and take the first set 6-4. The second set saw Shoshyna control the pace and win 6-1 to force a third. The third would see another deficit for Foshee. Down 4-2, Shoshyna won a big seventh game, and would finish it off with a 6-2 victory.
The junior Leandra Nizetic in the No. 2 position would be in a back and forth first set, but would be unable to take a big lead and fall 6-4 to Patrycja Niewiadomska. The second set saw Nizetic jump out to a 3-0 lead, and carry that momentum to a 6-2 win and force a third set. Nizetic was unable to get her footing early in the third, falling behind 4-1. Nizetic would pull within one and trail 5-4, but Niewiadomska would win the third set 6-4.
Kenzington Mann would represent the Eagles in the No. 3 position and fall behind 3-0. Mann responded by winning two straight, and would hang around until the match was tied 5-5. After a 6-6 tie, the set would go to a tiebreaker. Falling behind 3-1, Mann would be unable to climb back and fall 7-6 (7-2) in the first set. Laura Duhl would again start with a 3-0 lead in the second, but Mann would fight, winning three of the next five, but the deficit would be too much as she would fall 6-3.
Zoe Pradel would see herself in the No. 4 position and was able to secure a 2-1, and 3-2 first set lead over Andrea Noguera. Pradel however would be unable to keep the lead, as Noguera would storm back to win the first set 6-4. Noguera continued to surge, as she would take a 4-1 lead in the second and win 6-2.
In the No. 5 position for the Eagles, Olivia Marais went back and forth early with Elen Jantacova, but would fall behind 5-2 and lose the first set 6-3. After winning the first game in the second, Jantacova would respond and win six out of the next seven games to win 6-2.
Sara Vasic in the No. 6 position, saw a 4-1 deficit in the first, but would win two straight to pull within one. Leotina Stojanovic from NAU would be able to settle in and win the first set 6-3. In the second, Vasic would come back after trailing 2-1 and take the 3-2 lead. Stojanovic would then storm back and win four straight to win the second set 6-3.
"We are looking forward to spring break coming up and heading down to play some outdoor tennis in California. The girls are ready to face the next challenge, and definitely in a conference match coming up next week." Hinson said
