Hornets control match against Eagles

EWU dropped its first of two matches in California

3/23/2025 3:24:00 PM

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. — Eastern Washington women's tennis began its California road trip on Sunday with a Big Sky matchup against Sacramento State. EWU fell 7-0 to the Hornets as Sac. St. continued their shutout streak. The Eagles fall to 1-3 in the Big Sky and are 3-9 overall this season.

"The main thing that we brought today was a good fighting mentality. I really wanted to work on that, but we always have that at Eastern. I thought the girls did a good job of that against a really tough team on their home courts," head coach Dustin Hinson explained. "We played outside, which we love to do, but we haven't had much experience with it since the fall; that's definitely a transition for us. It's just learning that kind of outdoor point construction, which is different from indoors. Building on that is what we learned from today."

The Hornets went ahead 1-0 after securing the doubles point with three wins. After trailing 3-0 at the No. 1 spot, Kenzington Mann and Isabella Foshee won the next three games, then taking the lead 5-4. Sac. St.'s Madelyn Ferreros and Irene Riva responded, winning three-straight games to earn the win. Leandra Nizetic and Sara Vasic had a 3-2 game advantage at the No. 2 doubles, but Lou Baudouin and Emilija Pranyte won the next four to secure the doubles point.

In singles, Zoe Pradel battled tough at No. 4 against Pranyte. Pradel trailed 4-1 in the second set, but closed the deficit to 4-3 with two-straight wins. Pranyte closed out Pradel in the set for the 6-2, 6-4 win. Nizetic faced Catherine Walker in the No. 2 singles match. She competed tough, but dropped the match in two sets (6-2, 6-2).

Hinson expanded about his team's fight during all of the matches today, "I thought that we had a good mentality and we worked all the way through the matches. I think we learned a lot that we can take into our matches, specifically tomorrow. We can approach each match the rest of the season with that fighting mentality."

Eastern's all-time record against Sacramento St. falls to 2-20. The Hornets have now won five-straight matches, including four-straight shutouts. Sac. St. improves to 3-0 in conference and 12-2 overall this season.
