Eagles fall in matchup against Bengals

Eastern Washington began its final homestand of the season on Saturday afternoon

CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington women's tennis hosted Idaho State for its penultimate home match on Saturday. The Bengals grabbed the win from Eastern, 6-1, earning the point in doubles and five in singles.

Starting her final weekend playing at Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse, Isabella Foshee was in command of the No. 1 singles match against Asem Shoybek. The two went back-and-forth in the first set, with Foshee securing a 6-4 win to go up 1-0. The senior then turned up the energy and swept Shoybek in the second set, 6-0 and put the Eagles on the board. 

Olivia Marais opened strong in the No. 5 singles against Olivia Mikkelson, winning 6-4. In the second set, Mikkelson outlasted Marais 7-5 and the match was tied. In the third, Mikkelson jumped out to a 5-1 lead, before Marais closed the gap to 5-4. Mikkelson managed to stay ahead and win the third 10-6 and secure the match victory.

Playing at No. 4, Zoe Pradel was in a fight with Veronika Zarovna. Pradel delivered a win in the first set, 7-6, winning 8-6 in the tiebreaker. Zarovna won the next two sets (6-2, 6-4) to defeat Pradel. 

Anait Arutiunian returned to the courts and opened with a hard-fought win in the first set against Stefanya Shalakhova at the No. 1 position. Shalakhova won the next two sets 6-0 to get the point.

At the No. 3 doubles spot, Arutiunian and Marais had the lead 5-2, but the match was unfinished after the Bengals had clinched the point with wins at No. 1 and 2.

Up Next
Eastern Washington plays its final home match of the season against Portland State tomorrow (April 13), with first serve at 11 a.m. The match will also be senior day as the Eagles honor Isabelle Forshee, Kenzington Mann and Kelly Arends in a pre-match ceremony.
