Eagles finish first tournament in return to D1 ranks

Eastern Washington had seven players competing in Pullman

PULLMAN, Wash. — Eastern Washington's men's golf team was back in action for the first time in 23 years to start the week. Led by head coach Russel Grove, the Eagles headed down to Pullman to take on Palouse Ridge Golf Course fr the Palouse Collegiate. EWU closed out the tournament after two hard-fought days, placing 10th with a score of 849 (-3). 

"The guys showed a lot of potential this week. They came out that first round and competed with, beat a lot of well-established programs," Grove explained. "We also showed we've got a lot to learn and work on throughout the year. I'm really excited to see where the hard work will take us in the next seven months."

Freshman Callan Anderson led the Eagles' scoring with a 4-under (67) to tie for third in the first round. Anderson continued the scoring, shooting a one under 71. He finished tied for 24th on the individual leaderboard, posting a plus-1 (209).

The Eastern team was also assisted by Eli McNelly, who shot a 5-under 66 and tied for second, leaving the first round. In the second and third rounds, McNelly shot a 1-over (72) and 4-over (75). Finishing even in the tournament.

Washington State won the Palouse Collegiate with a team score of 807 (-45), led by Dylan Burcham 15-under (198) and Ben Mulder 12-under (201). Big Sky foe, Idaho, finished in eighth place with a 841 total score.

The Eagles are back in action Sunday, September 21st at The Tindall, hosted by the University of Washington in Bremerton, Wash. The tournament will take place from Sunday through Tuesday (Sept. 21 - Sept. 23) at Gold Mountain Golf Course.
