CHENEY, Wash. — The fall seasons are moving ahead for Eastern Washington athletics and one team is starting back up for the first time in decades. Football continues its road trip and faces an FCS opponent this week. Women's soccer gets to travel to Hawai'i for two games this weekend. Men's golf returns to the Division I ranks with its first competition since the program was restarted. Volleyball has three matches in Nevada this week and cross country takes its first road trip of the 2025 season.
Football - at Northern Iowa (Saturday, Sep. 13 at 2 p.m. PT, 4 p.m. CT)
The three-game road trip is nearly complete for Eastern Washington football as the team is in the midwest this week to play Northern Iowa on Saturday (Sep. 13). The game kicks off at 2 p.m. Pacific Time from Cedar Falls, Iowa. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Listen to the matchup live with the voices of the Eagles, Larry Weir and Paul Sorensen.
Eagle fans not traveling to Cedar Falls have multiple local spots to watch the game. Eagles Pub in Cheney, along with Swinging Doors and Red Wheel in Spokane will be streaming the EWU-UNI game live.
This past Saturday, EWU faced Boise State in Boise, with the Broncos controlling the game from the start and winning 51-14. Boise St. jumped on the Eastern quickly, scoring two touchdowns in the first five minutes of game time. They led 20-0 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Eagles put together a 10 play drive to score their first touchdown as
Jared Taylor walked into the endzone from five yards out. The Broncos responded with 24-straight points to take control in the game. Eastern scored again in the fourth quarter, but Boise had built a sizable lead. Taylor finished the game with 76 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Noah Cronquist caught four passes for 67 yards, including a career-long 49 reception.
Drew Carter led the Eagles on defense again, recording nine tackles, with seven solo.
Taylor leads the team and ranks fifth in the Big Sky with 111 rushing yards. His two rushing touchdowns is tied for second in the conference. Marceese Yetts is tied with Taylor for the second spot on the conference leaderboard as well. Carter has been the rock of the Eagle defense this season, accounting for 20 tackles - 12 solo. His tackle total ranks sixth in the Big Sky and 22nd in the FCS.
Eastern enters the week with an 0-2 record, both on the road. Northern Iowa is 1-1 and is coming off a 31-7 loss to Wyoming.
As a team, EWU has been disciplined with penalties, committing only eight this season to lead all Big Sky teams, along with ranking 13th in the nation. Eastern's special teams has made an impact, blocking two kicks that is tied for the FCS lead. Defensive tackles, Isaiah Perez and Jirah Leaupepetele, both have a block to their name this season, with Perez's coming against Incarnate Word on a field goal attempt, while Leaupepetele blocked an extra point against Boise St.
Men's Golf - at Palouse Collegiate (Tuesday-Wednesday(Sep. 9-10), All Day)
Eagle men's golf returns to the course for the first time since 2002 with its first competition of the 2025-26 season. Eastern drives south for the Palouse Collegiate tournament, hosted by Washington State in Pullman. The competition runs from Tuesday to Wednesday, with 36 holes on day one and 18 on day two. New head coach Russell Grove leads the re-launch of the EWU program and has already made an impact with the signing of 10 players for the '25-'24 roster. The group includes true freshmen, Callan Anderson, Charlie Gaffney and Kevin Wang. Grove added a deep class of transfers to solidify his lineup with Jason Bustos, Lucas Hughes, Trey LeCheminant, Eli McNelly, Zach Miller, Hogan Park and Ethan Parker.
Women's Soccer – at Hawaii (Thursday, Sept. 11 at 9 p.m. PST), at Hawaii Pacific (Sunday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. PST)
After closing out a four-game homestand, Eastern Washington women's soccer heads to Hawaii for its first road trip of the season. The Eagles face the University of Hawaii on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 9 p.m. PST before taking on Hawaii Pacific on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. PST. EWU holds a 3-2 all-time advantage over Hawaii, including a 2-0 victory last season, though this will be the first time the two programs meet on the Rainbow Wahine's home pitch. Sunday's contest marks the first-ever matchup between Eastern and Hawaii Pacific.
The Eagles travel west after a productive weekend at home, beginning with a thrilling 2-1 victory over St. Thomas. Despite going into halftime scoreless, Eastern responded after conceding early in the second half. Senior forward Chloe Pattison notched her fourth goal of the season to tie the match before Dakota Harris secured the win with a decisive header in the 85th minute. Assists came from Riley Arribas, Delani Walker, and Becca Gaido, while goalkeeper Kamryn Willoughby tallied three saves to preserve the result.
Eastern carried that momentum into a competitive clash with Air Force that ended in a 2-2 draw. After falling behind in the first half, the Eagles stormed back as Kendall Moore, returning from injury, buried a strike from outside the box to level the score. Just minutes later, Noelle Raczykowski recorded her first career goal to give Eastern the lead, though the Falcons answered late to even the match. Willoughby provided another steady performance in goal, and head coach Missy Strasburg credited the team's energy and ability to create dangerous chances in transition.
Women's Volleyball – at Nevada Invitational; at Nevada (Thursday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m.); vs CSU Bakersfield (Friday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.); vs Pacific (Saturday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m.)
Eastern Washington volleyball looks to rebound from a challenging start to the season as it heads to the Nevada Invitational this week. The Eagles (0-6) will open against host Nevada on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m., before facing CSU Bakersfield on Friday and Pacific on Saturday to close out the tournament.
The Eagles hold a 13-4 all-time record against Nevada, though the Wolf Pack swept the last meeting in 2023. Against CSU Bakersfield, Eastern is 1-2 all-time, with its lone win coming in straight sets last season. Saturday's matchup will mark the third all-time meeting with Pacific, with EWU still seeking its first win after falling in three sets in both previous contests.
Eastern enters the weekend after competing at the Portland Tournament, where it dropped matches to CSUN (3-1), Colorado State (3-0), and Portland (3-0). The Eagles showed flashes of progress, highlighted by a marathon 36-34 third-set victory against CSUN and late pushes against both Colorado State and Portland. Head coach Jon Haruguchi emphasized that while the team is still finding its footing, he's encouraged by the strides being made.
Several Eagles turned in strong performances in Portland, led by Kalista Lukovich (28 kills) and Quincy Moran (26 kills) on offense. Setter Anna Bolich paced the attack with 64 assists, while Elle Bruegman anchored the defense with 43 digs and Judith Bolomboy added 12 total blocks at the net. With valuable experience gained, EWU aims to build consistency and turn progress into results in Reno.
Cross Country - at Cougar Classic (Friday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m.)
The Eastern Washington men's and women's cross country teams continue their season this week as they travel to Colfax, Wash., for the Cougar Classic hosted by Washington State on Friday, Sept. 12, with races beginning at 5 p.m.
The Eagles opened their 2025 campaign at the Clash of the Inland Northwest, their lone home meet of the season. The women's squad impressed with a runner-up finish, placing all five scorers inside the top 20, led by seniors Rylee Brandon (11th, 14:48.30) and Nattie Ruzauskas (13th, 14:54.20). On the men's side, Eastern secured third place behind Gonzaga and Idaho, with senior Conner Wirth (23rd, 19:22.90) and Charlie Ledwith (24th, 19:24.50) leading the way. Head coach Erin Tucker highlighted the women's depth as a strength and pointed to pack running as a key area of improvement for the men moving forward.
