Eagles sweep Dinos in exhibition

Eastern Washington won all nine matches on Thursday morning

1/22/2026 1:28:00 PM

CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington women's tennis dominated its first home appearance of 2026, sweeping Calgary, 7-0. The Eagles had their swings working at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse on Thursday morning, winning all nine matches against the Dinos in the exhibition match.

Maria Lopez and Leandra Nizetic put the Eagles up quickly in doubles with a 6-0 sweep over Calgary's Anna Do and Orion Lebrecht. Zoe Pradel and Olivia Marais clinched the point for EWU with a 6-1 win over Isabella Kabaluk and Maya Elsaghir.

"I thought we did a really good job of coming out with good energy in doubles, which we definitely wanted to have in this match," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "We also wanted to work on being pretty aggressive early in points, which I thought we did an excellent job today. Our movement on court helped us set things up early in the point and later with our serve return. That was really good to see and I'm happy with the result."

In singles, Eastern dropped only 13 games, with Veronika Gayevyk and Marais sweeping their opponents, 6-0 at No. 3 and No. 5 respectively.

Pradel also was in control of her match at No. 4, winning 6-0 and 6-2 over Olivia Schurch. Anait Arutiunian battled Kablauk at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-2 in the first set and 6-3 in the second.

"Singles were very good. We faced some different opponents with some different playing styles so we had to be creative and focus on how we can set up our strengths and pick at their weaknesses. We had a really good chance to work on our singles matches this week," Hinson explained. "We wanted to be smart about reducing errors and just building a point for creating opportunities. We wanted to build points by not being afraid to make a few more shots rather than going for something early. It was good having a chance to actually put that into play from what we worked on all week. It's still something we're going to continue to work on as we move forward into the LC State match on Saturday. Overall for today, we had good belief and confidence from the entire team; I want to keep that going this season."
