Eagles battle close against Bulldogs

Eastern Washington nearly defeated Fresno State in Pullman

1/31/2026 6:42:00 PM

PULLMAN, Wash. — Eastern Washington women's tennis battled for the second day in a row, facing Fresno State today for a neutral match against Fresno State. The Bulldogs defeated the Eagles, 4-3, clinching the win with three singles victories.

"I think we're definitely making strides as a team and I was really happy with how we competed against a tough Fresno St. team today," head coach Dustin Hinson said. "Doubles, like yesterday, was a major one where we just could not get the point. We were up 5-4 at No. 1 before losing at No. 2 and 3. Everyone played really well and I think we even played better than we did yesterday. Our doubles is playing a lot more aggressive and confident as a team."

Fresno started strong in doubles, winning at No. 2 and 3 to secure the point. Anait Arutiunian and Sara Vasic competed until the end against Louna Cormier and Andjela Lopicic, but missed 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles.

Eastern split singles with Fresno, winning at No. 2, 5 and 6. Leandra Nizetic battled Paulina Montiel at two, winning 10-6 in the third tiebreaker. Aneliss Zamfirescu won her second singles match of the weekend, earning a 10-6 win at No. 5, against Klara Vukicevic. Olivia Marias cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Cormier at No. 6. Despite the effort, the Bulldogs clinched the match with wins in three of the first four singles matches.

"I thought we were being strategic and making small adjustments throughout our singles matches," Hinson explained. "Leandra played really well again for another win today. Aneliss pulled out her match at No. 5 to get a win for the second-straight day. Olivia played a dominant match from start to finish. I'm very happy with our singles play and we had some really close matches."

"It's good that we are making strides at this time of the year, in non-conference against some tough teams," Hinson added. "I feel like our confidence is growing and I'm really happy with the way the team is competing on the court. They always fight and never give up. They all work hard and that's all a coach can ask for. We continue to build for the future.
