SPOKANE, Wash. – The Eagles opened their outdoor season at the Sam Adams Classic at Whitworth University, recording 17 new personal records, nine on the men's side and eight from the women. The men finished first with 72 points and the women finished first with 69 points.
"Good ole outdoor track rust and dust buster, the first outdoor meet tends to be the hardest for those that do indoor track," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country
Erin Tucker said. "It seems the pits are further, your race is longer, the standards are higher, the sector lines are off, and wait, there is wind? Most, if not all of us, have thought at least one of these."
On the men's side,
Enoch Okoh led the sprints with a pair of runner-up finishes, clocking 10.73 in the 100m and 21.56 in the 200m.
Mason Davis placed eighth in the 100m, while
Maddy Shekhawat added a sixth-place finish in the 200m (21.83). In the 400m,
Erick Simpson claimed the event title in 48.63, with
Malachi South finishing third and
Pry'nce Millman sixth.
Toren Garcia secured his first collegiate outdoor victory in the 400m hurdles, winning in 54.92.
In distance events,
Owen Higgins picked up right where he left off, winning the 1500m in 3:50.21, while
Nathan Plant finished seventh.
Marcus Lemon dominated the 5000m with a winning time of 14:47.33, leading a strong showing that included
Evan Cheney (third),
Charlie Ledwith (fourth), and
Grady Fournier (fifth). The 4x100m relay team of Shekhawat, Okoh, Davis, and Kinteh took first in 40.90, moving into ninth all-time. The 4x400m squad of South, Garcia, Breier, and Simpson also captured the win in 3:18.61.
In the field events,
Cort Gebbers won the discus with a throw of 53.68m (176-1), while freshman
Litani Moimoi placed eighth.
Jason Nwaka and
Koda Woodard went 1-2 in the shot put, both throwing 15.62m (51-3).
Pry'nce Millman led the long jump with a mark of 7.04m (23-1.25), followed by
Merci Migani in second and
Nic Cunningham in seventh. Migani also won the triple jump (14.68m/48-2), with Cunningham finishing fourth. Alex Blech highlighted the pole vault, clearing 5.05m (16-6.75) to win and move into a tie for fifth all-time, while
Andrew Strawn finished second.
Logan Ashbeck added a fifth-place finish in the javelin (53.23m/174-7).
On the women's side,
Gilana Wollman placed second in the 100m, while
Shai Gray took fifth with a new PR of 12.73. In the 100m hurdles,
Cerae Mahabeer recorded a PR of 14.86 to finish second, followed by
Rachel Hardy in third (15.33).
Ella Seelhoff notched a PR in the 200m (25.94) to finish third, with Hardy placing ninth.
Ashleigh Burke led the 400m with a second-place finish (59.07), while
Abigail MacDonald added a PR of 1:01.20 to take fourth.
Jordyn Grady earned her first outdoor win in the 400m hurdles (1:02.32), with
Sydney Thweatt finishing second and
Magdalena Slomska fourth.
In distance events,
Emma Tomlinson won the 1500m with a PR of 4:39.13, while
Lexi Meyer placed fourth and
Ifechi Okoye fifth.
Sara Sanders dominated the 5000m in 17:29.55, with
Adrienne Root (fifth),
Rylee Brandon (sixth), and
Hannah Lee (eighth) rounding out the Eagles' finishers. The 4x400m relay team of Burke, Grady, Thweatt, and Meyer claimed the win in 3:57.73.
In the field,
Anne Shipp won the high jump (1.59m/5-2.5), with Seelhoff finishing third.
Ashley Fuller placed second in the discus (43.75m/143-6). The Eagles controlled the long jump, led by
Zoe Dunn (5.67m/18-7.25), followed by
Manthita Wague, Wollman, Gray,
Samarra Davis,
Azaria Purdy, and
Madison Bond. In the triple jump, Eastern swept the top five spots, with Wague winning (12.18m/39-11.5) to move into fourth all-time. Dunn placed second with a PR of 12.08m (sixth all-time), while Purdy moved into seventh all-time in third, followed by
Lenah Martin and Bond. In the pole vault,
Breauna Erickson won the event, while Frania Romero-Barba and
Kirsten Anderson tied for second, all clearing 3.60m (11-9.75).
"Questions to ask yourself, did you learn something, was it that bad, or am I going to get better?" Tucker added. "If the answer is yes to all, you are going to have an amazing outdoor season."
"Great job across the board getting the outdoor season going. We head into spring break next week and get ready for Vegas in two weeks."
