This Week in Eastern Athletics: March 23 - 29

Women’s golf starts the week in Nashville, Women’s tennis plays its first road conference match

CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington is on Spring Break this week, but the competition goes on for the Eagles. Women's golf is in Nashville for two days of competition, starting Monday. Women's tennis travels as its conference slate continues. Men's golf is one day into its competition in San Diego.

Women's Tennis - at Northern Arizona (Saturday, March 28 at 10 am PT)

Eastern Washington travels for its first Big Sky road test of the season when they visit Northern Arizona in Flagstaff on Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. EWU is 2-1 in the Big Sky and 8-6 overall going into Saturday's match. 

The Eagles had a home-and-road match last week, beginning with a
5-2 loss to Sacramento State on Friday (March 20). Eastern then traveled south for a quick non-conference matchup against Washington State, falling to the Cougars, 4-0

Facing the Hornets, Eastern dropped the three doubles matches to start against the Hornets. Zoe Pradel put the team on the board, winning at No. 3 singles in two sets over Irenee Riva. Sac. St. grabbed three of the four first singles matches to secure the match win. Against WSU, EWU fell behind early 1-0, after the doubles' point went to the Cougars. Starting play at the No. 3 singles, WSU won three matches to clinch the win against the Eagles. Three matches were left unfinished or did not start after the Cougars secured the match win.


Leandra Nizetic leads EWU with nine wins in singles, followed by Pradel and Olivia Marais, who each have eight. Marais is 3-0 in Big Sky matches, winning against the Hornets' Palina Saulevich (2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7)) this past week. 


Women's Golf - Nashville International (Monday-Tuesday, March 23-24, All Day)

EWU travels east this week for a two-day tournament at the Nashville Invitational, hosted by Lipscomb University. The tournament will be played at the Hermitage President's Reserve Golf Course in Nashville, Tenn. The Eagle lineup for the week includes Berkley Ledesma, Lexie Mahler, Brooke Mahler, Esha Reddy and Spencer Cerenzia

Eastern has been off since March 10, where they completed competition at the SoCal Spring Invitational. In Camarillo, Calif, EWU placed 13th with a 932 score in the tournament. Ledesma placed seventh among individuals, shooting +5 (218) for the three-day competition. The 218 was a career low for Ledesma. 

Men's Golf – UC San Diego Invitational (Sunday-Tuesday, March 22-24, All Day)

Eastern gets back to its spring schedule this week after a week off. They travel to San Diego, Calif. For the UC San Diego Invitational. The tournament begins on Sunday and runs through Tuesday, with one round each day at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Two weeks ago, the Eagles competed at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore. The team finished with a
score of +25 (877), placing 12th. For individuals, Hogan Park was the top-placing eagle, tying for 23rd on the leaderboard. Park shot 70s in rounds one and three. He was +1 (214) for the tournament overall. Cal Anderson tied for 35th after shooting +4 (217). Anderson notched a 70 in the second round. 

Park is currently tied for 34th on the individual leaderboard after shooting +1 in the opening round yesterday.
