Arutiunian named Player of the Week after 4-0 weekend

Anait Arutiunian earned her first player of the week award in her final regular-season road trip

FARMINGTON, Utah — For the first time in her career, Anait Arutiunian earned Big Sky Tennis Player of the Week as she prepares to close out her Eastern Washington career.

Arutiunian had a perfect weekend during Eastern's final road trip of the regular season, going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles matches. 


In EWU's 5-2 win over Idaho State, Arutiunian defeated Paulina Alkesandrowicz, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to help secure the team victory, while winning 7-5 over Naomi Johnson and Nataly Valdivia Rojas at No. 2 doubles, playing alongside Sara Vasic. Against Idaho State, the senior battled to a three-set win over Stefanya Shalakhova (6-3, 1-6, 6-3), adding another 7-5 win with Vasic in doubles over Asem Shoybek and Sydney Morris in the No. 2 match. 


This season, Arutiunian has 3-4 in conference singles matches, playing at No. 1 and No. 2, while being 5-10 overall. The Moscow, Russia native is also 3-4 in doubles Big Sky doubles matches with Vasic, carrying a 7-9 overall record. 


Saturday will be Arutiunian's final home match of her EWU career, as the team hosts Idaho on Senior Day. Ariutiunian, along with Leandra Nizetic and Vasic will be honored pre-match at 10:45 a.m. from the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse, with the match against the Vandals starting at 11 a.m. 


The Eagles have qualified for the Big Sky Championships for the first time since 2021, starting on April 23 and finishing on April 25.
