Second scrimmage has offense and defense battling back and forth

The Eagles move into the final week of spring ball

CHENEY, Wash. — Roos Field had the action on Saturday as Eastern Washington football held the second scrimmage of its spring practice schedule. The offense and defense battled for an hour and a half, with each delivering big plays going into the final week of spring ball. 

After grabbing an interception during the first scrimmage, Bjorn Birmingham doubled down and made two picks today. 

Along with Birmingham's interception, the Eagle secondary registered eight pass breakups, led by three from JoJo Maxey-Johnson.

Steven Lee Jr. forced a fumble on the offense's side of the field that Drew Carter recovered. Ben Voigtlaender and Yemoni Howell each recorded a sack during the scrimmage as well. 

Overall from the defense, Josiah Goode led the defense in tackles with 10. Justis La'ulu had five, including one for a loss, while Vincent Macaluso added four. Myles Mayovsky, Shea Robertson, and Carson Moore each tallied three tackles for the day. 

Kaden Rolfsness engineered the offense's touchdown drive, as the second-year quarterback ran the ball in from 13 yards. Rolfsnees finished the scrimmage with 47 passing yards and 43 rushing yards on the day.

Jake Schakel completed 15-of-23(65.2%) passes for 126 yards, throwing one interception. 

Cole Pruett led the Eagles in receiving, catching seven passes for 69 yards. Wesley Garrett made three catches for 66 yards, including a long reception of 39 yards. David Cabrera added four receptions for 41 yards.

Kevin Allen III carried the load at running back, rushing 12 times for 43 yards, adding two receptions out of the backfield.  

Eastern Washington finishes its spring camp practice schedule next week, culminating in the Spring Game on Friday (May 1), with kickoff at 5 p.m. from Roos Field. The Spring Game is free and open to the public.
