SPOKANE, Wash. –
The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team faced off against local rival Gonzaga on Thursday night (Nov. 30), falling by a score of 69-45. Both teams shot an equal 39% from the field.

"We played a good team in a good environment, so our mistakes were amplified. When we made mistakes, I didn't like the fact that we hung our heads about it," said head coach Wendy Schuller. "In Eagle basketball, we play hard and we play tough and I didn't think that we did that tonight and that's probably the most frustrating thing, and that won't happen again."

Both sides got off to a slow start, as it took over two minutes to get points on the board before Gonzaga opened a 6-0 run. An Amy Hartleroad three-pointer helped the Eagles go 3-3 from field goal range, but GU led 14-9 after one quarter.

Defense came out hot forcing three turnovers in the first two minutes of the second half, holding GU scoreless during that time. An Amira Chandler jumper cut the lead to three as the Eagles went 3-3 from field goal range. A Delaney Hodgins trey brought EWU within four points 20-16, but from there the Bulldogs exploded on a 16-3 run and led 35-21 heading into the locker room.

The Eagles shot 39.1% from the field in the first half and forced 11 turnovers, but surrendered 12 themselves while allowing the Bulldogs to shoot at a 50% clip.

Eastern Washington used an 8-0 run to cut their deficit to 10 points to open the third quarter, trailing 39-29. Both sides were unable to cash in a field goal for over three minutes, but it was Gonzaga who broke through to tack onto their lead, holding EWU without a field goal for the last four minutes of the quarter.

The Eagles went 3-3 from field goal range to close out the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as they fell by a final score of 69-45.

WIN-LOSS RECORDS: Eastern Washington drops to 2-4 during the nonconference slate while the Bulldogs improve to 3-3 overall. The series history now moves to 32-13 in Gonzaga's favor, as tonight marked the 45th all-time meeting. EWU has now dropped 14 straight to the Zags.

TOP PERFORMERS: Delaney Hodgins led the team with 11 points, followed by Violet Kapri Morrow who had 10. Amy Hartleroad had a career-high seven. Hodgins also paced the Eagles with eight rebounds and one block. Symone Starks tacked on six steals.

KEY STATISTICS: Fouls gave the Eagles trouble as they had four players with over four on the night, as two fouled out. EWU was also outrebounded 43-25. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, as Eastern went 2-15 while the Bulldogs went 3-10.

NOTEABLES: Symone Starks had six steals, for her 14th career game with over three steals and her third this season, tying a career-high. Delaney Hodgins scored in the double-digits for the 82nd time in her career and the fourth time this season. Amy Hartleroad had a career-high seven points. Violet Kapri Morrow scored in the double-digits for the third time this season and 11th in her career.

SOARING TO THE TOP: She now has 1,534 career points to rank third all-time on EWU's all-time career scoring list. The Preseason Big Sky MVP is just 200 points away from moving into sole possession of second place and is 332 away from breaking her older sister Haley Hodgins' all-time record of 1,865 points.

UP NEXT: Eastern returns to Reese Court for three-straight home games, beginning with Boise State on Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. EWU then plays host to Multnomah for Kid's Day on Dec. 8 before closing the stretch with Cal Poly on Dec. 11.
