EWU Tennis Teams Host Four More Matches This Week

The women start off the four home matches with competition on Friday starting at 5 p.m. and the men continue the stand at 10 a.m. on Saturday

CHENEY, Wash. -- The home stretch of tennis matches continue this week as the Eastern Washington University's tennis teams host four more matches. The first match will take place this Friday, March 3 with the women team playing a rescheduled match against Lewis-Clark State College with matches starting at 5 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.

Competition will continue the next day, March 4 with three matches in one day. The men will kick off the busy day in the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse by competing against San Diego Christian at 10 a.m. The women will also play against San Diego Christian at 1 p.m. The day will end with the men playing again at 5 p.m. against the Community Colleges of Spokane.

The men's team enters this weekend of competition with a 5-3 overall record, 3-0 in the Big Sky. The women are 1-8 overall this season, 1-1 in the Big Sky.

Matches are free and open to the public.

For the men . . .

The men are off to a hot start in this season, as they are starting undefeated in the Big Sky for the second season in a row. They have had big wins against Sacramento State, Portland State and most recently against North Dakota.

"As I have mentioned prior, we are just simply focusing on perfect effort every day," head coach Steve Clark said. "I say simply because it is not simple to do it day-in and day-out, for a long period of time, shot after shot, make it or miss it, execute or not.  Just staying focused on the right shot, the right energy level and just raising the bar at every position takes focus."

Last time EWU faced the Community Colleges of Spokane was back on Feb. 7, 2015, where Eastern won 7-0. Overall, the Eagles lead the series 11-1. This will be the first time they play San Diego Christian. Matches will begin at 10 a.m. against San Diego Christian and will pick up again at 5 p.m. against CCS.

The Eagles are coming off a dominate 7-0 win over North Dakota, the first time a team in the conference was able to blank the Fighting Hawks before Idaho doing the same thing the next day.

The Eagles will be going on a non-conference stretch as they continue to play teams like Radford and Air Force in the next couple weeks. They will continue Big Sky play on March 17 when they take on Weber State in Ogden, Utah.

"I look forward to seeing how they do daily and the energy they bring," Clark added. "I am pleased with the progress on all phases and the guys are a close group who enjoy hanging with each other which is important.  This weekend will be a chance for everyone to play, some new doubles combinations and mixing some things up for some team spirit and senior/captain requests."

For the women . . .

The women's tennis team is coming off a 1-1 weekend at home after collecting their first win of the season against Big Sky's North Dakota on Feb. 25. The Eagles went on to play against Fresno State the next day (Feb. 26) where they lost 6-1 to the talented team.

EWU is coming off a hard fought win against North Dakota where they won the match 5-2. Sophomore Faye Worrall has been on a strong streak as she has won both her doubles matches in the No. 1 spot and went 1-1 in the singles spot last weekend.

In the last two matches, the Eagles have been able to clinch wins in the double sides of the match.

Eastern was supposed to play Lewis-Clark State about a month ago on Feb. 3, but due to a downpour of snow, the match was rescheduled for this Friday, March 3 with matches beginning at 5 p.m.

Last year when the Eagles competed against LCSC, the team swept the Warriors 7-0. Overall, Lewis-Clark State leads the series by a slim margin of 16-13 overall against EWU.

The next day (March 4), the women will continue competition against San Diego Christian with the match beginning at 1 p.m. This will be the first time for a matchup against the two teams.
