The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team lost to Idaho State by a team score of 7-0 in Pocatello, Idaho today (April 15). With this loss, EWU's record is 3-5 in the conference and 5-12 overall.
"The girls did a great job with effort and generally wanting it," head coach
Dustin Hinson said. "They really stepped up their focus and I can tell they know that they brought their best effort. They fought hard and they are in good spirits heading into tomorrow because they are focused on the right things -- performance and process, rather than results. Big improvement from the past several matches."
One of the doubles teams from Eastern was able to collect a win against ISU. In the No. 3 spot, senior
Katrina Domingo and freshman
Valentina Sottile defeated their opponents by a score of 6-1.
In singles, the Eagles fought hard but were not able to have a victory on that side of the court. In the No. 1 spot, junior
Janaya Smith fought in three sets before falling to her opponent. In the first set she lost 3-6, but came back and won the second set 6-3. In the last set, it was a battle back-and-forth as Smith lost 5-7.
The rest of the singles were also competitive matches. Sophomore
Faye Worrall lost 6-4 in both sets at the No. 2 spot. Junior
Erin Blessing competed in the third spot and lost 6-0, 6-1. Junior
Rachel Swindell lost 6-3 in both of her sets in the No. 4 spot. Sottile competed in the No. 4 spot and lost 6-4, 6-3. Rounding off the singles competition was freshman
Marta Heinen who lost in a tiebreaker in the third set. Heinen lost her first set 4-6 and won her second set 7-5. In the tiebreaker, she ended up falling 5-10..
In doubles, Smith and Worrall teamed up for the No. 1 spot and lost 6-3. In the No. 2 spot, Blessing and Swindell fell 6-0.
The Eagles will continue Big Sky competition by taking on Weber State tomorrow (April 16) in Ogden, Utah. Matches will begin at 10 a.m.
