The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team will close out the regular season this week as they take on Big Sky's Montana State and Montana, both at home. The match against Montana State will be tomorrow, Friday (April 21) with matches beginning at 3 p.m. The competition will continue on Sunday (April 23) against Montana with matches beginning at 10 a.m. It will depend on weather if the matches are indoors or outdoors. Matches are open and free to the general public.
The Eagles will have to wait for final results around the league this week to see if they earned a bid to the Big Sky Championships that take place on April 27-29 in Phoenix, Ariz. EWU will need to win both or at least split to have a chance to make the tournament. Only the top six teams will earn a spot into the tournament.
Montana State is currently in second place with an 8-1 conference record. The Bobcats have already clinched a spot into the tournament.
Montana is sitting in 11th place overall with a 1-8 conference record. The chances of the Grizzlies making the tournament has come to an end.
The Eagles are coming off a hard fought 5-2 loss against Weber State. Eastern has a 3-6 conference record and a 5-13 overall record.
The team will also be celebrating the three seniors for Senior Day. Those athletes will be seniors
Erin Blessing,
Katrina Domingo and
Carolina Lopez.
Looking into the tournament . .
Five Big Sky teams have already claimed a spot to a championship, making EWU, North Dakota and Weber State battling for the last spot. If EWU at least splits their weekend matches, Eastern will go ahead of UND (4-7 in the conference), with the Eagles holding the tiebreaker over North Dakota if they end up tied. Weber State and Eastern are currently tied at 3-6, but WSU holds the tiebreaker. Weber State will be taking on Northern Arizona and Southern Utah this week. Eastern needs them to lose both of the matches to have a chance or EWU will need to win both of their matches.
The five Big Sky teams who are already in the tournament are: Northern Arizona, Montana State, Idaho, Sacramento State, Idaho State and Northern Colorado.
