The Eastern Washington outdoor track and field team completed the Oregon State High Performance meet on Saturday (April 29) as senior
Sarah Reiter broke her own school record in the 5,000-meter race.
After two days of facing PAC-12 competition in Corvallis, Eastern came away with a total of three new marks to its all-time top-10 list.
"The coaches truly enjoyed watching the team represent EWU against such stellar competition," said men's head coach
Stan Kerr.
Men's Top Performers
Leading the team was senior
Scottie Miller in the discus, with the team's only first place finish in the individual events. Miller's third discus title of the season was his best yet, throwing for a new personal best of 178-2. His mark is good enough to rank fourth in EWU history.
Placing second and third at OSU was the long jump tandem of senior
Trenton Osborn (23-5) and freshman
Keshun McGee (23-2 1/4). The two athletes have combined for five top-three long jump finishes in the outdoor season.
Sophomore
Steaven Zachman continued his weekly improvements in the 3,000 steeplechase, this time setting a new personal best with a time of 9:17.72 and placing fourth. Freshman
Trey McAdams also came away with a new personal record in the 400-meter hurdles at a mark of 54.49.
Women's Top Performers
Senior
Sarah Reiter highlighted the women's portion with a new Eastern all-time mark in the 5,000. Reiter's time of 16:21.50 shaved six seconds off the previous EWU record she set at the Mt. SAC Relays in 2016.
Freshman
Kaili Keefe, who already owns the second-best 1,500-meter time in school history, improved on that time even more. She finished two seconds faster than her previous best with a time of 4:25.98. She still ranks second on the all-time list. The women's 4x100 relay team consisting of senior
Paige Hammock, freshman
Sophie Bowles, senior
Kendra Hamm, and junior
Rebecca Tarbert placed first for a second meet in a row with a time of 47.47.
Junior
Maegan McCurdy moved up on the EWU all-time list with a jump of 18-8 1/4 in the long jump. She placed fifth in the event, and climbed from ninth to eighth on the school's top-10 list. Senior
Erin Clark placed third in the pole vault with a mark of 12-6 3/4, her fifth top-three finish of the season.
Comments from Men's Head Coach Stan Kerr
"The S's, as in Scott Miller and
Steaven Zachman, led the way for us in a very productive meet. Scott won the discus with a season best performance, and Steaven's steeplechase performance solidified his being a scorer in Sacramento. Our athletes, especially the distance crew, competed against professional runners who gave the entire team a critical look at high level racing."
"Trenton and Keshun placed second and third in the long jump, setting up a good showdown with the conference's best jumpers in two weeks. Trey had a half-second personal record in the 400 hurdles in part by giving top effort against a three-time NCAA Champion in his race."
Comments from Women's Head Coach Marcia Mecklenburg
"Friday night's distance twilight section of the OSU High Performance meet turned out to be high performance for our distance crew.
Sarah Reiter led the way with a new school record in the 5,000. Running it at dusk under the stadium lights gave it even more meaning.
Kaili Keefe ran her best 1,500 ever right before Sarah's 5,000 race. Kaili is inching closer to the school record, pretty impressive for a freshman. I was very excited about
Gracie Ledwith's third place finish in the 10,000 with a big minute plus personal record. That was another stand out performance for a freshman."
"Our lone win came in the women's 4x100 made up of Hammock, Bowles, Hamm, and Tarbert. That crew is very consistent and it is their second meet win in a row."
"
Maegan McCurdy set a personal record for the second meet in a row in the women's long jump. She is getting more and more comfortable on the runway with every meet."
What's Next
The Eagles make their way to Ellensburg, Wash., for the Central Washington Open on Friday (May 5).
