EWU Women’s Tennis Defeated by Nationally Ranked Washington

The Eagles are 2-2 overall

FULL RESULTS

SEATTLE, Wash. –
The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team fell to Washington 0-7 today (Feb. 11) to close out their weekend on the road. UW is currently ranked No. 24 in the nation according to the ITA Division I standings. Eastern sits at a 2-2 mark overall and have yet to start conference play.

"Another great doubles performance for the team," said head coach Dustin Hinson. "We had our chance to come out with the doubles point again against a top 25 program."

Stephanie Broussard and Rachel Swindell came away with the lone Eagle win of the day in the No. 3 spot (6-2). The duo also found success yesterday in doubles against Alabama.

"What a great win for Stephanie and Rachel in doubles," said Hinson. "They dominated that match and it's exciting to see the way they are coming together to compete. The other two doubles matches came down to the wire and it's a credit to UW for rising to that occasion to get the doubles point."

Rylee Braeden and Janaya Smith teamed up against Vanessa Wong and Miki Kobayashi from Washington in the No. 1 doubles spot but couldn't get the win after a well-fought match (4-6). Zoey Nelson and Faye Worrall followed with another close match but fell short (5-7).

Smith put up a fight in the No. 1 singles spot against Stacey Fung, ranked 11th in the nation, but fell 4-6, 6-7(7). Braeden competed against Vanessa Wong, 36th in the nation, and fell 0-6, 0-6. Nelson lost (1-6, 1-6) as well as Worrall (2-6, 0-6) and Broussard (1-6, 1-6). Swindell played a tough match in the No. 6 spot but eventually lost (4-6, 3-6). "The seniors [Smith and Swindell] really stepped up in singles today with some great matches," said Hinson. "Janaya went toe-to-toe with the 11th ranked player in the nation and competed really well."

"These matches are great for our confidence because it lets us know that we can compete with the best in the nation and we are really taking the positives from this match into our home opener next weekend and into conference play. I'm really proud of the team and the way they are working to get better. It's fun to be a part of and we are excited about what's yet to come this season."

The Eagles host their home opener this weekend (Feb. 16) against Lewis-Clark State College before facing Gonzaga (Feb. 18).
